I know I haven’t tweeted much about the Gulf Wars show, which is a sadly a mess & unfocused, but the part that was really embarrassing was inclusion of this Felix Gonzales Torres piece and the wall text. Some idiot compared the candies to ammunitions…who cares. 🙄
The Jalal Toufic work was very terrible too. Navel gazey, dull, and mostly illustrative. There are too many terrible works to list but I’ll list a few more.
Also these Jenny Holzer works are fetishizing of power, not critical of anything. She’s become increasingly terrible.
The Paul Chan work was particularly mediocre. The kind of stuff I’d expect at a student space.
And this installation? No comment. Just depressing.
I think Hakim got a lot of the points right in his review. This exhibition needed more editing and non-Iraqi art works were generally the weakest in the show. hyperallergic.com/535943/examini…
Still happy we got to see most of the Iraqi work though. A rare opportunity too see this stuff at a major museum.
