In 2004, I went to the @sundancefest for the first time as the assistant to an agent who had hired me roughly ten months prior with exactly zero experience in the industry.

Late in the festival at a late night party whose specifics I have long since forgotten, I met a filmmaker who had a short at the festival.
We vibed. I asked to watch his film. And I did.
It was good. Beautifully shot in black and white. Uncommonly funny. Uncommonly human.

After the festival I gave that short to my boss, who agreed about its quality (it didn't hurt that the filmmaker's manager had flagged him for her as well).
She met with him the next week and signed him in the room.
She remains his agent, and my dear friend, sixteen years later

I was just the lucky one who met him at a party and had a boss who cared enough about my opinion to spend 12 minutes watching the short at my recommendation.
I will say though, Jojo Rabbit being on @theblcklst in 2012 is a fun additional layer of the story
