Rule of law cannot coexist with a President who directs favorable outcomes for defendants charged with committing crimes for the President's benefit.
At least with Flynn, the system could still go on pretending that the President hadn't directly intervened to alter the sentencing recommendations.

Here, the DOJ isn't even giving itself a fig leaf. It's reversing course in direct acquiescence to the President's wishes.
Oh look, the DOJ found a fig leaf after all.

I guess, going forward, the President will tell the DOJ how to handle his friends and enemies, and the DOJ will act in accordance with the President's wishes while claiming it was DOJ's own idea all along.
Under Trump, it became DOJ policy to seek the harshest possible prison sentences against criminal defendants.
