To the people protesting against me outside the theatre last night:

No hard feelings, but one question. What would you do to allow trees and rich ecosystems to return to the Highlands?

As you could tell, I'm no fan of shooting deer. But what's the alternative? Until we get public agreement to reintroduce their missing predators (wolves and lynx), their numbers will otherwise stay so high that trees can't grow and a great range of species are excluded.
Contraception isn't a viable option. Because (thanks to the deer) the hills are treeless, you can't get close enough to them to fire a contraceptive dart. Even if you could, there's still a host of other problems: thedeerinitiative.co.uk/pdf/contracept…
This is my response to an email stating that deer don't need to be shot in the Highlands: we should use contraceptives, fence them out of large areas or introduce predators instead:

When I read sentences like this, I wonder whether environmental issues have been taken into account.
"A newborn in the UK today has a 50% chance of living to 105."
Is that 50% with or without 4C of global heating?
Not to mention the social realities.
There's a blinkered narrative that extrapolates current medi-tech advances into the future, and assumes they translate into rising life expectancy, regardless of the social and environmental forces in the real world.

For life expectancy to keep rising, as some scientists assume, we would need not just better medicine.
We'd need:
- a habitable planet
- a good distribution of wealth
- good and improving nutrition
- and the belief that there will still be some bloody point to living that long

Beautiful. But ... why is commercial fishing excluded from only 0.04% of our waters? Why can't we see a wonderful resurgence of wildlife like this all around our coasts?

Even in terms of jobs and income, large no take zones are likely to make more sense than commercial fishing. And in terms of defending our wildlife, our ecosystems and our carbon stocks, the difference is off the scale.
PS: Can we invent a better term than "no take zones"? It's a rubbish way of describing places where marine wildlife is rebounding. Suggestions welcome.

NY1's Errol Louis is showing that he shouldn't be allowed to cover NYC politics. He has no idea what he's talking about.

The idea that grassroots activists (who he calls "pseudo-revolutionaries") in NYC are "leeching off the work of real reformers" is just detached from reality.

Last night, the @CommerceGov said it would add a citizenship question to the #2020Census. In theory, it’s about getting an accurate count for purposes of the Voting Rights Act. In reality, it’s a racist xenophobic move with severe long-term consequences. commerce.gov/sites/commerce…
The census is an incredibly important tool that touches so many aspects of American lives. It’s the foundational data for everything from voting rights for black people, median earnings for women versus men, fertility rates, and more.

Last night at my church, I had the opportunity to teach a workshop called, "How to Read and Study Your Bible," on principles/methods of biblical interpretation. I've come to believe this is one of the most important things I can do as a pastor. Why? /1
We are in a state of near crisis in the American Church concerning the trustworthiness (and therefore functional authority) of Scripture. (I said in the Church, not in the world.) /2
Not only do fewer and fewer Christians have any clue how to interpret the Bible -- guided by sound, consistent principles -- many have given up on (or, sadly, are utterly unaware of) even the *possibility* of a humbly confident, rationally defensible take on scripture. /3
