uring the riot my brothers arm was broken and nothing was done about it no medical no pain medicine not even wrapped up....so now it’s starting to heal on it’s own and still no meds..he has been calling crying because he is in so much pain
my sister Sharren has been calling, calling, and calling finally after two weeks of calling they finally come and get him for medical and gave him some Tylenol and took him back to his cell...If you only knew how it feel to see a loved one hurt and there is nothing you can do

So very happy to see all the actions that have taken place to support the prisoners in Mississippi. Last April, a man who had just got out of prison, reached out to me
He said he had photos and videos that show horrendous conditions in SMCI and Parchman. He said it was time to make it all public and that too many were dying in MS. Prisons.
We expected bad- but this was a whole other level.

Ok folks, I have decided to update as best I can on Mississippi because there is (sadly) a lot of bad information out there. I have spent all day (literally) on the phone with prisoners, family members and media as well as messaging back and forth
I will say this- MDOC is NOT being even close to transparent with the media and MS Govt. In all my years of advocacy/activism I have NEVER not had a govt rep respond. Mississippi state reps do not respond.
With that being said, these prisoners can use positive thoughts, prayers and good vibes- what ever you got- send it on to them, please.

My friend Tony suffers with lasting prison trauma. He shares his pain in order to help himself try to heal.

When I first went into prison I watched these guys beat another inmate. They beat him and beat him and beat him.
When he was down I watched them keep kicking him and kicking him until his head split open and they killed him.

They kept kicking him.

No guards came to help him.
I didn't either.

I was afraid.

It ate me up for years. I didn't help him either.

As we're talking about #Parchman, let's discuss the history of the prison and the current conditions. There are no good prisons, AND Parchman has a very specific history. That history is important, as is understanding the bedrock of the Mississippi prison system specifically
Parchman was started as a massively profitable convict leasing enterprise at the dawn of the 20th Century. This has been covered in the book Worse Than Slavery (discussed here by the NYT) nytimes.com/1996/04/28/boo…
Parchman was founded in 1901 as a *reform* to improve the convict leasing system at the time. In 1918 the prison had a *net revenue of 825,000* (or approximately an $800 profit per prisoner. $825,000 was a lot of money in 1918. pbs.org/newshour/arts/…

Juan Fresnada died on Friday afternoon at the Bronx hospital where he was taken in critical condition after the mugging early on Tuesday, the New York police department said. Officers have released surveillance photos and videos in hopes of pinpointing suspects.
Police said Fresnada and another man, 29, were walking along Third Avenue in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx around 1.30am when several muggers approached them and demanded their property. When they refused, they were attacked.

#Medical #AI researchers: badly performed/described cross-validation is the most common reason I recommend major revisions as a reviewer.

CV can be used to tune models and to estimate performance, but not on the same data. See this diagram for doing both.

@weina_jin The weird thing about CV in AI is that you don't actually end up with a single model. You end up with k different models and sets of hyperparameters.

It allows an estimate of generalisation for a *group* of models, but that is still a step removed from a deployable system.

1) This study comes from UC San Diego. It consists of asylum seekers seen at the shelter I volunteer at. usipc.ucsd.edu/publications/u…
2) Synopsis: Shelter has helped roughly 17,000 asylum seekers, from 28 countries. 98.7% had children under 18 with them. We see many families, rarely are there no kids.
3) 1 in 3 questioned reported complaints of their detention with CBP: 61.8% of those complaints were about rotten food, lack of baby formula, not enough food and/or dirty drinking water. 34.5% of those complaints were concerning hygiene: no showers, no toothpaste or brushes,
