On a personal note about the response from the Advocate General. They have effectively stated as official representatives that they believe that the Scottish Parliament elected by the Scottish People has no right to ask the Scottish people a question on their sovereign rights.
I highly suspect their next move will be to challenge the standing of 1888 members of the electorate having the right to ask the court for an opinion on the matter in a "how dare ordinary members of the electorate be so bold as to ask a question of the court on a matter of law"
Once we get past that, it will be interesting to see how the UK Government justifies the assertion that the Scottish Parliament cannot legislate to ask the people of Scotland a simple question. Of course, all of this was expected, but there is always a part of you that thinks:
Surely they wouldn't be so cynical as to effectively tell the electorate of Scotland that they have no more power over their own constitutional future without the permission of the very people they wish to get away from, than a colony?
Unfortunately, the utter disrespect and contempt for Scotland with respect to the UK Government seems to know no bounds, and so we, the ordinary members of the electorate now need to impress upon them that their position is untenable.
It's time to take this matter to the only people in the UK with the right to give an opinion on law, our judiciary! It's time to put this ambiguity which the UK Government relies so heavily upon to bed, once and for all. And so....we, people will move forward.
I will add to this, that in response to a 45-page opinion from Aidan O'Neill QC and a multi-page letter from our instructing solicitor Elaine Motion, the UK Governments response was two paragraphs.
