Important judgement by Mr Justice Knowles - Humberside Police acted unlawfully in visiting a man’s place of work when investigating allegations of transphobic tweets - judiciary.uk/wp-content/upl…, but College of Policing operational guidance is lawful.
Extraordinary language by the judge in this case:
Of the woman whose complaint gave rise to the police investigation, the judge says this:
The judge says a course of action open to the police would have been to take no further action in relation to the tweets and simply advise Mrs B not to read any more of them.
He concludes:
This is an important judgement. If you’re interested in the debate over transgender issues and freedom of speech you should read it. Full judgement here - judiciary.uk/wp-content/upl…
By the way, the tweeter involved was @harrytheowl, whose account is suspended. I’m not sure whether it was over this or something else.
The Judicial Press Office have pointed out that the judge is Mr Justice Julian Knowles, to differentiate him from another High Court judge with the same surname.
Now edging ever so slowly towards 20k followers, thanks, it would seem, to a thread about a judgement on freedom of speech - which is nice. Not bad for someone whose Twitter presence boils down to the words of Sgt Wilson in Dad’s Army - do you really think that’s wise?
