BREAKING - Indigenous Youth for Wet’suwet’en Winnipeg & their allies have ended their peaceful 11-day occupation of Minister of Northern Affairs Dan Vandal’s office after the Minister failed to respond to their demands to condemn the RCMP invasion of #Wetsuweten territory.

1/
Over these 11 days, Minister Vandal has refused to speak publicly about the ongoing displacement of Wet’suwet’en peoples in a way that even remotely satisfied the Indigenous youth occupying his constituency office in Winnipeg.

2/
“Minister Vandal has failed not only the youth in his office, but our entire generation, and the generations to come,” said Emily Amos, organiser and spokesperson for Indigenous Youth for Wet'suwet'en Winnipeg.

Over the course of these 11 days, Minister Vandal only met with the youth for a total of 1.5 hours, despite being back in the riding this week. On 1 occasion, the Minister came into the office and insulted the youth, calling them “disgusting”

At the same time, unprecedented public support in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and land defenders has been building among Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities across Canada and around the world.

5/
Wet’suwet’en supporters have taken action to disrupt business as usual - inclu blocking railways, roads, ports, & borders - to send a clear message that the Coastal GasLink pipeline cannot be constructed on #Wetsuweten unceded territory without their consent.

As militarized RCMP invaded and arrested hereditary chiefs in the midst of ceremony, hashtags like #ReconciliationIsDead and #ShutDownCanada trended online illustrating the mounting public outrage in response.

The occupation in Winnipeg has been one of many happening in MP & MLA offices across the country - from Vancouver, to Toronto, to Halifax. In Victoria, Indigenous Youth for Wet’suwet’en held a multi-day blockade of the BC Legislature, culminating in a shutdown of the building

8/
“Our action here in Winnipeg - and the hundreds of others across Turtle Island - make it clear that people will not stand behind this ongoing colonial displacement of Indigenous peoples to make way for extractive projects,” said organizer Emily Amos.
