THREAD: (1/11) 3 years ago, @ewarren read Coretta Scott King's letter opposing the 1986 appointment of Jeff Sessions to a fed'l judgeship. @ewarren thought King's objections remained relevant in 2017 as the Senate considered the confirmation of Sessions as the US Attorney General
(2/11) In her letter, Coretta Scott King was critical of Jeff Sessions' actions as a US Attorney in the early 1980s, and she did not want him to have a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. For example, she wrote:
(3/11) King's 1986 letter and testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee should have been entered into the Congressional Record. However, the Chairman, Senator Strom Thurmond (SC) (who ran for Pres. in 1948 on the Dixiecrat segregationist ticket) apparently forgot to enter it.
(4/11) And then over 4 decades later, Mitch McConnell decided that Coretta Scott King's words, as vocalized by @ewarren, constituted a breach of Senate decorum. Senators are not supposed to insult their fellow Senators on the Sen. floor (sigh).
(5/11) GOP Senators then VOTED to silence @ewarren for READING CORETTA SCOTT KING's TESTIMONY (that "mysteriously" got left outd of the Cong. Record). And McConnell scolded @ewarren for being warned, but nevertheless persisting, and then put her in FREAKING TIME OUT.
(6/11) And you know who else McConnell scolded and put in "TIME OUT" that day--CORETTA SCOTT KING. Now can you imagine how anyone on planet earth feels entitled to police the behavior of CORETTA SCOTT KING? To silence her voice?
(7/11) That day, I remember thinking about how Mrs. King never stopped working for racial equality & voting rights. More than 2 decades after her husband was assassinated, she's doing that tedious but vital labor. Writing that letter. TO STROM THURMOND, no less. Can you imagine?
(8/11) I don't know how @ewarren kept her cool in that moment. I do remember the look on her face. It's that look when you realize that there is no cavalry coming. We've got to save ourselves. I think that was the moment she decided to run for President.
(9/11) I think @ewarren ran because she knew what the great Audre Lorde told us: "Your silence will not protect you." You know what else Audre Lorde said? "I am deliberate and afraid of nothing."
(10/11) I'm tired of men policing women's behavior. I'm tired of other women policing women's behavior. Who has done the WORK? Who can govern? Who will read and study and consult and do their HOMEWORK? Who will persist?
(11/11) The cavalry isn't coming. Our silence won't protect us. We don't have time to be afraid. #PresidentWarren
