What galls me most about @EliseStefanik & @DevinNunes’s little stunt yesterday is the Right’s attempt to pass it off as a #shepersisted moment. foxnews.com/media/elise-st… That’s an insult to heroic women who persisted, from @ewarren to #RosaParks. Let’s compare the two incidents: /1
@EliseStefanik @DevinNunes @ewarren During the Jeff Sessions confirmation hearings, after reading a letter from #Coretta Scott King, Warren was gaveled out of order on the grounds that she’d impugned a fellow Senator. This took Warren by surprise b/c the letter had previously been entered into the Senate record. /2
@EliseStefanik @DevinNunes @ewarren Warren persisted in reading the letter, was ruled out of order by a party-line vote, and was barred from speaking during for the rest of the debate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverthel… cnn.com/2017/02/07/pol… She was forced to read King’s letter outside the Senate. facebook.com/watch/?v=10154… /3
@EliseStefanik @DevinNunes @ewarren Use of this rule, which was created to stop Senate debates from devolving into actual fistfights, is extremely rare. washingtonpost.com/news/morning-m… Moreover, it’s highly unusual for a Senator to be silenced during her constitutional-mandated role of advise-and-consent to the POTUS. /4
@EliseStefanik @DevinNunes @ewarren By contrast, yesterday Nunes & Stefanik concocted a ruse in which he “yielded” his time to her despite their both knowing that this violated the rules that their committee had adopted last week. vox.com/policy-and-pol… When @AdamSchiff correctly gaveled Stefanik out of order… /5
@EliseStefanik @DevinNunes @ewarren @AdamSchiff …Stefanik feigning shock and outrage, then whined that she’d been interrupted—thereby creating a made-for-FoxNews moment intended to distract from the witness’s damaging testimony. Later, as per the same rules, Stefanik not only questioned the witness, she was yielded time… /6
@EliseStefanik @DevinNunes @ewarren @AdamSchiff …by the other members of her committee so that she had the second most speaking time of any GOP member. slate.com/news-and-polit…

In short, the GOP genuinely surprised Warren w/an archaic, little-enforced rule—and then actually silenced her for the remainder of the debate. /7
@EliseStefanik @DevinNunes @ewarren @AdamSchiff Warren’s heroic conduct resulted in the #shepersisted meme & inspired women everywhere.

By contrast, Stefanik participated in a cynical ploy, likely concocted by GOP Nunes to distract from his mistreatment of a female witness; intentionally broke known rules; faked outrage… /8
@EliseStefanik @DevinNunes @ewarren @AdamSchiff —and got to speak anyway, when it was her turn, as she always knew she would.

In sum, Stefanik was a willing pawn in a disingenuous GOP scheme to create political theater. Warren, by contrast, was silenced by GOP leadership amidst a good faith effort at substantive debate. /9
