@phlntn's Emoji Builder (2018) marked a turning point for emoji memes and mashups. Tons of customization and the compositions were remarkable. (Sadly, the site was taken down awhile ago).
@Emojipedia @phlntn Maybe too much of a tangent for this thread but emoji keyboard memes also gained popularity in 2018. I credit @SlackHQ with playing a huge role in making these mashups more than viral content. Their custom emoji feature made them actually useful.

Since the last emoji release I've been consulting with a number of experts around gesture, linguistics & comics theory to craft a strategy for smiley emojification. One area we are exploring w @visual_linguist is established visual language found in comix

There is some good representation of these visual morphemes found in existing emoji. Not surprising considering emoji's roots.
