Today, February 19th, is a Day of Remembrance. On this day, in 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 authorizing the evacuation and internment of Japanese Americans along the West Coast of the United States. /1
More than 120,000 people, two-thirds of us American citizens, were rounded up, removed at gunpoint from our homes, and incarcerated for years behind barbed wire fences in ten different camps, without trial or due process. /2
We mark this day to say both "Never Forget" and "Never Again." I have spent my life trying to ensure that we learn from this dark chapter of our shared history. /3

Today is the day we call #DayofRemembrance, to commemorate the day 77 years ago that defined my life. On that day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which imprisoned my family and me simply because we looked like the people that bombed Pearl Harbor.
I remember the barbed-wire fence that confined me for four years from ages 5 to 8. I have memories of sentry towers with machine guns pointed at me. I remember the searchlights that followed me when I made the night runs from my barrack to the latrine.
It is Executive Order 9066 that made me a social and political activist dedicated to preventing such miscarriages of justice ever again. Roosevelt was a great President. But he was also a fallible human. A great President can also make great mistakes.

As a child, I always knew that I was different than the other boys. They would talk about "Monica," but I had my heart on "Bobby." I played along, but I knew that if I spoke my heart, I would be ostracized. So I remained silent. /2
After I became an actor, a few colleagues knew that I was gay, but the world at large did not. Coming out could end a career in that day. I remember watching heartthrob actor Tab Hunter be outed in the gossip rags, then dropped from studios and projects. So I remained silent. /3

Judging from my feed, a lot of good folks out there could use some bucking up ahead of tomorrow's midterms. I, for one, am optimistic. People have said that's naive, that old-fashioned liberals like me always put too much faith in people only to be let down. Some thoughts: /1
I spent my childhood being told one thing about America, but living something entirely different. We were taught that we were equal under the law, and we pledged allegiance to a flag, but inside of barbed wire fences. The promise of America was so hollow as to be meaningless. /2
But my father once told me that America is a democracy, as great as the people who inhabit it, but also as fallible. It was the people who had failed us, led by leaders who had crushed our dreams, caused the nation to rise up in fear against us, who were wholly innocent. /3

With all of the news about Iranian Americans being held and interrogated at the U.S.-Canada border, my thoughts keep turning to the 30-page "Alien Enemy Questionnaire" that my great-grandfather, Juro Shiga, was required to fill out after the FBI arrested him in January 1942. /1 Document entitled
Juro had lived in the U.S. for 37 years, and had owned a dry goods business in Seattle for the past 26 years.

Because then-existing immigration laws prohibited Japanese immigrants from becoming citizens, he never applied to naturalize as a U.S. citizen. /2 Juro's responses to questions 28-34 of the questionnaire, describing his business.Juro's responses to questions 69 and 70, stating how long he had lived in the U.S. and stating that he had never applied for naturalization because he was not allowed to do so (by the U.S. government).

John Dingell, her deceased husband, was the longest serving rep in our history. He served 59 years. He inherited his seat from his father who held it for 22 years.
Rep. Dingell divorced his first wife in the 70s. He was a "swinging single" until he met Debbie Insley. She is from wealthy family and she is 28.
They had a lot in common as she had gone to Georgetown, like himself and his father.

In 1981 they were wed. He was 56 and had served in congress longer than his bride had been alive.

Another 45,000 Japanese nationals living in the United States were also incarcerated. #DayOfRemembrance #EO9066 A black and white photograph of a family moving their things out to the street.
#EO9066 was issued ten weeks after Pearl Harbor. Toku Shimomura of Seattle described the news of the attack in her diary, writing “Our future has become gloomy. I pray that God will stay with us.” #DayOfRemembrance A diary with Japanese writing inside.
Three months after Pearl Harbor, Americans of Japanese ancestry and Japanese nationals living on the Pacific Coast and in southern Arizona were ordered to register and then report within a week to hastily designated temporary detention centers. #EO9066 #DayOfRemembrance Exclusion Orders 69, showing were Japanese citizens would have to leave the area.

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.
