The claim was made in court by Assange’s Barrister. The core of their code of conduct requires: “you must not knowingly or recklessly mislead or attempt to mislead the court.” That includes not making a submission or representation which you know is untrue or misleading.
A friend who is also a barrister tells me Assange’s barrister is a QC (Queen’s Counsel), or silk, which means he’s senior and well respected. See qcappointments.org

It looks like the hearing this reporting comes from is a preliminary one to determine what evidence will be admissible in a full extradition hearing, maybe next week. We don’t yet know if this is firsthand evidence or hearsay & whether it’s backed by documents or other evidence.
