One of the troubles with asymmetric game design like this is that you have to disallow game mechanics or strategies which are fun in single player mode which would be catastrophic in multiplayer.

(A surprising amount of non-entertainment software has this problem, too.)
There are related insights, like "Why don't we make the enemies smarter?"

The customer doesn't want to be challenged. The customer wants to feel challenged prior to winning.
(One of the great, great lines about this was lampooned in World of Warcraft by the developers, in the speaking voice of a boss character: "Kill the one in the dress!"

*Of course* if the NPCs were genre savvy they'd kill the healer first, but their job *is to lose.*)

People who routinely employ the phrase tl;dr believe they are optimizing for scarce attention but I think, based on substantial experience with it, that they are mostly pessimizing for depth of thought.
Attention is so rarely the bind constraint. The world has fractal detail everywhere and nearly infinite blandishments.

Relatively few professionals are effective because of specializing in high-volume low-consideration decisionmaking.
Much professional work is in successful execution. For the variant which is more about discernment than execution, in most cases one isn't rewarded for alacrity or for repeatedly predicting the future.

One is rewarded for the magnitude of non-consensus rightness one finds.

Consider it from the perspective of a founder choosing between businesses to run. There are some businesses where even the success case for the business is a failure for you. There are other much more attractive businesses.
Neither "You should run a business; there's more freedom in running a business than anything else you can do" and "You shouldn't run a business; nobody makes money in business, not really" are very representative of the truth.
Some people believe businesses to be very difficult to determine the quality of ex-ante. I once held this opinion. On the basis of substantial experience, I believe I'd be much better at selecting successful businesses today than I was 15 years ago.
