..actual Canadian former adviser to PM Harper who negotiated CETA Canadian- EU deal @AGMacDougall told us it was not a model for UK, sceptical re timing, and lack of consensus building by UK Gov with business/unions over shape of deal compared to Canada

NEW/ Exclusive:

Government has just told BBC that Coronavirus/COVID19 is to be formally registered as a "notifiable disease", after our enquiry about concerned English businesses unable to claim losses related to outbreak on insurance policies...
BBC learnt yesterday business groups expressed concerns directly to UK Govt at meeting with Defra, as Scottish Government had already made Coronavirus notifiable last month. The @Foodanddrinkfed described the lack of notification as "ludicrous". Wasn't in yesterdays action plan.
We also spoke to a range of small businesses who had been told by insurers that the policy doesn't kick in until a Government puts a disease on the notifiable list, alongside SARS, measles, plague etc. Also now compulsory under 1984 act for doctors to notify even suspected cases.

PSA long said that No Deal would threaten its planned investment in new Astra at Ellesmere Port. Govt argues that No Deal not now possible after deal. But now the PSA boss Tavares confirms that the investment is on hold until he knows if there’s going to be tariffs...
Ie Number 10 might argue that after Withdrawal Deal done there is no such thing as No Deal... but in this significant example of inward investment it is whether we ultimately leave on WTO terms, whether you call that no deal or no trade deal, or Australia, that matters... /2
But this, I think, is new - a suggestion about compensation for tariffs... can’t see how that would be WTO compliant -

“G7 central banks will continue to fulfill their mandates, thus supporting price stability and economic growth while maintaining the resilience of the financial system,” which doesnt sound like for example concerted rate cuts...
Would have loved to have heard G7 call. Presumably Mnuchin backing Trump’s call for Fed to cut... perhaps wanted some G7 cover for that..maybe Italians want ECB too as well. Does pressure from White House make it more difficult for others to acquiesce?

This is the key section - so basically if UK chicken farmers use battery techniques, say, or farmers use pesticides, or GMOs etc to cheapen production, that's undercutting the EU - and of course this reads across to coming UK-US deal. /2
So question for @SamuelMarcLowe @DavidHenigUK and others trade wonks.

1) If UK does trade deal with US and imports non-compliant US standard agri products, is that 'regression'? /3

EU doesn't do mutual recognition of standards for third countries. It does mutual recognition of conformity assessment. Does not apply to all goods. No two MRAs are the same. Look at the differences between countries. Compare Switzerland/Australia

Recognition of conformity assessment means that the importer can take the certification of an approved testing house in the exporting state without having to insist on testing by a notified body in the territory of a member state.
Routinely this is confused with mutual recognition of standards which the EU simply doesn't extend to third countries. The single market system doesn't allow for standards divergence. Yet high ranking Tories think this can be done in an FTA.

When supporters of Boris Johnson say: he achieved what so many claimed was impossible: he got EU to renegotiate #Brexit deal therefore he can also get an EU trade deal done by December next year although many say unlikely .. It’s important to remember the red line PM crossed.. /1
He didn’t get the new Brexit deal by bullying/impressing/charming the EU. He got it by agreeing to protect their single market on island of Ireland after Brexit by putting a customs border down the Irish Sea. Allowing a ‘division’ between NIreland + GB he’d pledged never to do /2
Of course the EU also engaged with Boris Johnson because they believed that he - as a political figure - had a better chance of selling a deal back home to MPs than Theresa May ever had - BUT have a chat in EU circles .. /3

Surely the diplomat is being unfair, you say. Listen to Michel Barnier and incoming trade commissioner Phil Hogan. They say a deal can be done quickly. The U.K. currently shares EU rules and regulations. How difficult can it be to strip them away to a basic FTA, you say..BUT /2
If Johnson wins a majority in this election and takes U.K. out of EU in Jan, then Brussels is preparing to offer him a quick FTA but with the utmost levels of EU regulation bells and whistles attached (so-called level playing field provisions) /3

Frost also admitted that even without the backstop, the ERG could well block a deal
