NEW/ Exclusive:

Government has just told BBC that Coronavirus/COVID19 is to be formally registered as a "notifiable disease", after our enquiry about concerned English businesses unable to claim losses related to outbreak on insurance policies...
BBC learnt yesterday business groups expressed concerns directly to UK Govt at meeting with Defra, as Scottish Government had already made Coronavirus notifiable last month. The @Foodanddrinkfed described the lack of notification as "ludicrous". Wasn't in yesterdays action plan.
We also spoke to a range of small businesses who had been told by insurers that the policy doesn't kick in until a Government puts a disease on the notifiable list, alongside SARS, measles, plague etc. Also now compulsory under 1984 act for doctors to notify even suspected cases.
HEalth professionals told us that the structures around centralised testing for COVID19 mean that Public HEalth England already have much of the data they would have had from earlier declaration - but the move has important legal consequences
Indeed it is a bit of a mystery why it wasn't done earlier - Scotland did it on Feb 22nd, Ireland and Northern IReland last week, Guernsey on Monday. There will now be some hefty insurance payouts for some businesses with the correct insurance...
DHSC told me:
“We want to ensure any steps taken to protect the public
during the COVID-19 outbreak are proportionate and do not come at an
unnecessary social or economic cost.
“To mitigate the impact on businesses, we will register
COVID19 as a notifiable disease...
DHSC, continued... "This will help companies seek compensation
through their insurance policies in the event of any cancellations they may
have to make as a result of the spread of the virus.”
That came through at 11pm last night after we had asked for a right of reply from Government for the story we were doing for @BBCr4today as to why it had not been made notifiable.

It rather appears Government is rather interested in what is going to be on the Today programme,
