Bernie Sanders is not a European social democrat. He is an out-and-out Marxist. Upon his return from the USSR in 1988, he celebrated the Soviets moving "forward into some of the early visions of their revolution, what their revolution was about in 1917."
Upon returning from a visit to Cuba, he didn't just praise their literacy program -- he said that the Cuban people "had an almost religious affection" for Castro. Which is pure propaganda, reflected in full fellow-traveller fashion.
Bernie continues to maintain that China has "taken more people out of extreme poverty than any country in history," naturally neglecting that China's limited embrace of market-based reforms -- not Chinese communism -- was responsible for this.
Bernie has had little but warm praise for his good friend, Sandanista socialist dictator Daniel Ortega, who -- not coincidentally -- endorsed him this week.
In February of last year, Bernie refused to call Nicolas Maduro a dictator and refused to say that Juan Guaido was the legitimate leader of Venezuela. For years, his website carried an editorial gushing over Hugo Chavez's "reforms."
Bernie's openly embraced nationalization of all major industries in the US in the 1970s, when he was in his 30s; he has said that JFK's anti-Cuban revolution attitude made him "physically nauseous."
