Are we do desensitized as a country to violence against people of color that it doesn't register at all that people are surviving and fleeing terrible violence only to be forced back into terrible violence by the US government? People are being kidnapped, disappeared, killed.
WTF does it take to get the US public to give a shit about people the US government is forcing into the hands of the cartels? My 11 yo client survived the MS-13. They sexually assaulted her when she was 9 yo. They held a gun to her head. Her mom survived years of abuse.
Her abuser tried and failed to kill her multiple times and she survived. She fled. She did what she needed to do to save herself and her child. And now the US government has falsified official government documents to send her back to Mexico where she has disappeared.
What does it take to get people to care? What does it take for their lives to have value to the US public? Their lives have value. They are human beings. They are important. Their lives are meaningful. We will never live down the shame of this war on asylum.
