One final #thread for the evening. About misinformation and factchecking.

Someone shared this video today, on a WhatsApp group I’m in. Channels video about BH suspects arrested in Lagos and Ogun. Posted as current news.

Screenshots from the video.
As soon as I saw it the detective in me awakened. Ji masun.

Yeah it’s a Channels video alright.

But we need to confirm if it’s a recent video or an old one.

So I started examining the video, for identifying details that show a date.

Video itself didn’t carry a date.
The only possible clues lay in the scrolling news banner at the bottom of the screen.

So I examined them one by one.

1. Spain Crash
2. Egypt Protest
3. Iran pulls out of match with Ghana

I then Googled these incidents one by one.
Spain Crash: July 25, 2013
Morsi Protests: 30 June to 3 July 2013
3. Iran pullout of match: 29 July 2013
In other words, this was a 2013 Channels video. Being shared on Whatsapp as something current.

Took me only a few minutes of sleuthing to verify the video.

Armed with evidence I proceeded to rebuke the poster.
Please let’s be giving ourselves full and complete 🧠.

Before you share ‘breaking’ news kindly confirm a few details. Is it new? Could it be old? What’s the source? What’s Google saying? Who else is reporting it? If it’s from YeyeTimesNG, pause & see if anyone else reporting it.
Not everything they send to you must be sent to others.

The concerns that Nigerians generally have about a deradicalisation and reintegration Programme (for persons who renounce terrorism or suspects found innocent after trial) are all GENUINE concerns. But we must also not fall for ignorance and misinformation. And partisan mischief.
So as I said the concerns and queries are all legitimate. But the other side of the story is the question: what does a country do with the people who have surrendered or been found guilty? That’s also a legitimate question. Not just in Nigeria but all over the world.
Let me at this point share this. From Feb 2018; Two years ago this month.

A Federal High Court sitting in Wawa Cantonment, Niger State had just concluded the 2nd phase of prosecution of Boko Haram suspects.

Let me tell you guys a quick interesting story about the ECA.

So, as you all know you cannot spend ECA money without the approval of the State Governors - under the aegis of the National Economic Council statutorily chaired by the VP.

Do you know what happened under GEJ? (We can’t leave him out since you insisted on dragging him into the story).

Under GEJ the distrust between Governors and the Presidency/FG was so high it was mind-boggling. Many Governors had zero trust in the FG. And you couldn’t blame them
And it wasn’t only opposition Governors o that were affected by this cat-and-mouse thing. Amaechi was a PDP Governor when the then PDP Presidency waged massive war against him. Remember the Governors Forum election madness.

Aero Contractors is investing in the automation of it Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services. They launched this MRO facility in 2018. Have carried out C-checks, and landing gear and engine replacements locally, stuff that used to be done abroad. businessday.ng/aviation/artic…
I think it’s a great story. The airline fell on hard times, necessitating takeover by AMCON. Since then it’s diversified into heavy maintenance, hence the MRO facility. Kicked off 2018, in the last two years they’ve since signed up clients outside Nigeria: businessday.ng/aviation/artic…

Today, I found out that some young people I know (ages 15 and 16) are in 'school' Whatsapp groups with teachers.

I salute the dedication of teachers who go beyond, but I think this a very dangerous breach of privacy / work-play balance, and must be stopped.

Here's why: #Thread
1) You cannot join a Whatsapp group without revealing your phone number. This is an immediate risk for minors - the room for abuse is so large I'm stunned that schools allow this. Pedophilia, sexual predation, grooming - all possible when adults have kids' phone numbers.
2) There is also risk of harassment by other kids. I remember my friends in high school (esp girls) who kept phone numbers very private, because they didn't want to be constantly bombarded.

When a teacher makes you join, there's no opt out. Everyone gets your phone number.
