3) Regarding accuracy of tests - while I’m waiting to find more, keep in mind that while false negatives are common - it might not always be the test. Could be the way the virus sheds in diff body fluid samples. Also positive test still useful — unless the PPV drop too much.
4) p.s. if anyone finds lab parameters of sensitivity and specificity of tests uses in diff populations - DM me.

Epidemic tracing in WA— bad news—it seems yesterday’s new WA case #2 is directly descended from WA’s case #1 from January, via genetic analysis. Thus the world renowned geneticist below concludes that there’s likely “cryptic” stealth transmission in WA for over a month! #COVID19
2) Rewind -here was WA case1’s coronavirus test history (report from @NEJM), which showed Case1 had positive tests via nasal swabs, but had contradictory oral swab/other results. Notice Case 1’s oral test was negative on day 12 despite positive nasal. Shows maybe unstable test.
3) (repost) we need to know what extent Case1 may have infected others besides Case2 in WA, given that Case2’s infected descended from Case1 genetically, but neither knew w/ each other. Researchers currently say “Our best current expectation is a few hundred current infections”🤔

BUCKLE UP folks— scientists have found why new #coronavirus is so much more infectious - “Compared to (old) SARS’ way of entry, [the new] binding method is “100 to 1,000 times” as efficient”. Study is pre-print but it has been confirmed by another group.

2) Moreover, “When looking at the genome sequence of the new coronavirus... (scientists) found section of mutated genes that did not exist in SARS, but were similar to those found in HIV and Ebola.”
3) “This finding suggests that 2019-nCoV [the new coronavirus] may be significantly different from SARS coronavirus in the infection pathway” the study said.

HHS Sec Azar is going back on his word on future #COVID19 vaccine affordability... “we can't control that price" ==> but just few days ago he promised it would be affordable. Maybe he will eat his words when entire communities get sick because he wants to pander to big pharma.
2) Let’s not forget who Azar really is - former CEO of Eli Lilly, a titan of big pharma.
3) I’m not trying to politicize. Stopping the epidemic with every means possible is simply common sense. I’m simply calling out that we need the vaccine to be affordable and accessible for all if we want to truly reduce the epidemic as much as possible. #COVID19 knows no bounds.

The global economic environment has changed, and the tables may have turned.

Over the long term, rich countries grow at about the same rate. But Germany, South Korea, and Singapore have outperformed the U.S. since the recession, leading many to wonder if their systems are superior.
What have these countries been getting right?
