In 1918, the influenza pandemic — Spanish flu — spread throughout the world. By 1920, ⅓ of the world's population had been contaminated, and 10s of millions died.

Conspiracy theories then (WWI) were rife:

* It was unleashed by the Germans via submarines sailing the world
* It was blamed on foreigners (pick a country: find the 'bad foreigner')

* It was said to be from Spain ('Spanish' = 'bad foreigner') but it originated on a farm in Kansas

* Enemy bombs dropped unleashed 'buried pathogens'

* It was a biological weapon linked to Bayer aspirin
* Dancing and jazz music were blamed for the bacteria

* It was a symbol of 'sin' and 'immoral behaviour'

* Actually, the 1918 pandemic continues today as the H1N1 virus (swine flue in 2009; H3N2 in 2019).

* Iran sits between Iraq and Afghanistan

* Iranians are NOT Arabs (neither Iranians nor Arabs like this confusion)
* ~95% are Shi’a — not Sunni — Muslims

* Sunni Muslims comprise ~80% of all Islam
The origins of the tension rested on oil.

In 1901, Australian William D’Arcy, wanted to counter an Imperial Russian threat by securing a Western footprint in the region. Funded by Britain, Anglo-Persian (later BP) oil co was formed.

"I've been watching the funeral procession for assassinated military leader Qassem Soleimani, killed on orders of President Donald Trump as he was arriving for a meeting with Iraqi authorities in Baghdad...
...there are some indications that do not bode well for American and Western interests, at least as they are currently perceived.

The Iranian response to the funeral was unexpected. President Trump stated that folks in Tehran would celebrate Mr. Soleimani's death. Hardly...
The number of mourners in Tehran was in the multi-millions, and overwhelmed all preparations for the funeral procession. Estimates of between 6 to 10 million in Tehran, with hundreds of thousands to millions in other cities where there have been processions (Ahwaz, Mahed, Qom).

Didn't forget @HC_Richardson, so some info on oil in Syria.

Syria basically has none. What Trump said has absolutely no truth. But there are a bunch of conspiracy theories, which shows how gullible he is when he hears them.

Oil and gas is absolutely irrelevant in Syria:
Oil production has been on the decline in Syria for decades. In the decade prior to 2011 Syria only produced 400k barrels per day. In 2008, Syria’s oil expert vs import had a negative balance. 2/
What oil they had was on the border with Iraq (2.5 bill barrels of reserves early 2011).

It exported most to OECD Europe from terminals out of the Med (Latakia, Tartous, Baniyas). 3/

This is our Spanish flu. Regardless of what "the authorities" have told you about not panicking, act accordingly.
2/ A century ago the Spanish Flu infected 500 million people and killed approximately 20-30 million people - a mortality rate of about 4-6%. COVID-19 currently appears to have a mortality of about 2% but should be considered just as deadly...
3/ ... the Spanish Flu spread in a world already ravaged by The Great War, still without the discovery of antibiotics, lacking respiratory machines, steroids, vaccines, gene sequencing etc etc. In short the 4-6% mortality was in a world without modern medicine.

1. Short #flu thread:
If you haven't gotten a flu shot yet but intend to do so, you'll want to think about getting a move on. Flu activity is starting to tick up & with the intergenerational & geographic mixing opportunities Thanksgiving provides, it will increase.
2. Predicting #flu is a nutty thing to do. Flu will make people sick this winter. Which type will be the biggest culprit? When will it peak? These aren't questions that can be answered ahead of time. But activity is already well underway in Louisiana & Puerto Rico.
3. Super interesting: Nearly 2/3s of confirmed #flu cases so far have been caused by influenza B viruses. Flu B often waits till late in the season to materialize. But there was almost no B activity last year. Could this year be a predominantly flu B season? Stay tuned.
