Polling suggests that one in three voters in 2019 felt compelled to vote tactically, rather than for the party they actually supported. Yet the result was still grotesquely disproportionate to votes cast. First Past The Post is straining our democracy to the limit.
In the South East of England, the Conservatives won 88% of the seats on 54% of the vote. In Scotland, the SNP won 81% of the seats on 45% of the vote. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, more than half of all votes (54% and 55%) went to candidates who were not elected.
The Tories won a landslide because their votes were efficiently spread. More than half of Labour voters backed losing candidates, while less than a quarter of Tories did so. The Tories won an MP for every 38,000 voters; Labour one for every 51,000. As for the Greens & LDs...
The House of Commons is the only elected institution at UK-level. We don't have a separately-elected executive or second chamber to balance it. Yet FPTP locks out minorities, corsets voter behaviour & produces wildly disproportionate outcomes. Electoral reform is long overdue.
