We’re all biased to use the tools we know

Which is good in one sense bc we know the tools.

But challenging...because it may not be the best approach/tool for the job.

We need to consciously counteract our bias to use the tools we know (1/3)
So #developers need to counteract their instinct to solve with building. And #designers to solve with design. And #marketers to solve with marketing. And #prodmgmt to solve with [for another tweet]. Etc.

...to a “t”, technical founders mentioned that they wished they had resisted the instinct to build their way out of problems.

This episode was amazing as @arvidkahl and @SimpsonDaniK strike a great balance between research, discipline, and “building”.

An interesting dynamic.

Teams where each engineer has their own special project, w/an engineering manager acting as router.

The roots of this are interesting.

Performance management. Independence. Autonomy. High utilization. Ownership...”you get to carry this through!” (1/3)
I remember as PdM saying “actually, X is the most important thing.” The reply being: “Well, only 1 person should work on that. I’m under pressure. Everyone wants their own project. Give me three other things!”

...this is a big contributor to high utilization/lack of focus (2/3)
The fascinating thing is the mix of sort of altruistic reasons, pressure, eng culture bias, stereotypes, fear (fear of pairing/mobbing), and the lure of busy-ness.

In highly individualistic cultures (e.g. SV) it seems more pronounced (3/3)

10 change agent tips...

1) When you publicize being interested in improving something, you’ll attract people who share that interest. But an interest doesn’t necessarily mean they are able to contribute. Often for good reasons. Pick co-conspirators wisely. Respect choices.
2) It is easy to talk yourself into believing you have more support than you really have. Or, that people support 100% of your vision, when they actually only agree with the sound-bites.

Make a point of really, really listening. Find the true common ground.
3) Beware of the spokesperson trap where you become the figure-head for an effort. Why? Isn’t advocacy positive?

It is, but you make it that much easier to poke holes in the cause — “oh, this is all about X”. Shoot for something distributed, resilient, and hard to pin down

I've realized that one of the critical prod dev skills is pinpointing unchecked assumptions. Clue here is grouping all customers.(1/3)
Experience is important because if we check *all* of our assumptions, *all* the time, then that is a lot of assumptions to check. It is worthwhile, but costly.

In this example, we assume different groups of customers will have the same needs .. (2/3)
...we are also potentially falling into that "might as well" trap, whereby we delay more important work bc of assumptions about efficiency.

...and equating lots of feedback to importance.

It's a muscle to build and something to practice (3/3)

1. In the beginning, consistency beats quantity. Practice for the minimum amount of time that you can reliably maintain. 1-5 minutes every day > many minutes irregularly.
2. Meditation can be fun. Practice in a way that optimizes for fun, pleasant, enjoyable, relaxing.

Let’s first talk of what a lady must not take because it will surely fail:

Not Flagyl.
Not Krest.
Not sprite.
Not alum.
Not salt and water.
Not milk and malt.
Not 7Up and alabukun.
Not Andrew Liver Salt.

All these things do NOTHING to prevent a pregnancy. So what can she take?
Most of those listed items and a lot more- are actually unfortunate myths pushed by people who mean well but are actually ignorant about the biology and science behind getting pregnant.

So many tried those things and failed- but they keep quiet so more women can fool themselves.
So if you just had sex-
What can you use to safely prevent a pregnancy?

There’s a simple answer.
And there is a complex answer.

The simple answer is the Post Pill.
(Or what we commonly call Postinor).

Use that immediately after sex and you have more than 90% chance of success.

Questions that continue to go unanswered:

What could it possibly mean to say that one does not "identify with" their body?

How can one's identity become separated from one's body?

How is identity different from the lived experience of being in a body?
Psychological identities have to do with the images we hold about ourselves. Note the word: IMAGE. Identities themselves are fluid and changeable. I may identify as a writer, a wife, a runner, a friend, one day, and the next day I may drop these identities.
The images we hold about ourselves are not fixed. Bodies, conversely, while changeable to degrees, are fixed. They are stable over time in a way that images about ourselves cannot be. What would it mean to say that I, "identify with" my body. Do I "identify with" having hands?

For #TransDayofRemembrance I want to tell you a story.

Last Nov/Dec, I was homeless. @realDonaldTrump had just been elected. I was living in my car. I was cold. I was hungry. The pain from my chronic lower back issues was horribly bad, every moment of every day (1/x)
Sleeping in my car was making it worse. I could barely stand, let alone go grocery shopping or walk longer than about 10 min, w/o being totally wiped out for the next day or 2. I was receiving no medical treatment for being #trans, for my #AtrialFibrillation or my back pain (2/x)
I was unemployed, had no degree, didn't pass, and I was severely depressed.

Only a few ppl know this, but I think it's time to talk about it. I almost died last December. I didn't have much $, but I was doing research on the best methods to kill myself that'd be effective (3/x)
