Jason Kenney's conspiracy-theory-fuelled anti-environmentalist inquiry finally produced its interim report last month, so we put in a FOIP to get a look at it. You won't believe what we found #ableg
Turns out this public inquiry isn't very public at all. Our request for the interim report was denied. But if you read the letter there is an interesting detail in there:
Our request for a copy of the interim report turned up 11 pages of records. Just 11! The commissioner has produced an 11 page interim report and the public isn't even allowed to look at it? This is a public inquiry?
This inquiry is hiding details on its budget and is going to cost Alberta taxpayers north of $2.5 million dollars and the commissioner only turned in a interim report 11 pages long? What size do you think the font was? pressprogress.ca/jason-kenneys-…
The commissioner hasn't spoken to us or any other members of the Canadian environmental movement that Kenney has accused of being a part of this conspiracy theory. What exactly is Commissioner Allan doing all day? cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…
Thanks to another FOIP we know the budget of the inquiry. The commissioner is making $291K for the years worth of work. The only person we know for sure he's spoken with has been Vivian Krause as confirmed by his spokesperson.
Thanks to some fine reporting from @charlesrusnell we also know that Commissioner Allan donated and campaigned for Doug Schweitzer, the Justice minister who recommended him for the job. cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…
We also know that there are potential conflicts of interest with the vendors chosen by Allan to work on the inquiry. A $905,000 contract went to Dentons, a law firm in which Allan's son is a partner. cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…
It's also not clear what Dentons is doing on the legal side with the inquiry as the attorney of record for Allan in a legal action brought forth by Ecojustice is the firm Rose LLP, not Dentons.
And that's not the end of it. A former business partner of Commissioner Allan's is also a partner in the accounting firm Deloitte which as been retained by the inquiry as well. Whether this business partner is involved or not in in the inquiry has not been confirmed or denied.
So yeah, all of that for an 11 page interim report that the public's not even allowed to read. It's been more than a month since Commissioner Allan submitted his interim report and there hasn't been any word from government on what's next for this very private public inquiry.
