No one in Alberta’s political or media class seems to have noticed that AIMCO has invested nearly $4.3 billion into the Coastal Gaslink Pipeline. This Financial Post story fails to mention some rather important news #ableg google.ca/amp/s/business…
That is that around this time last year RCMP officers were arresting grandmas, creating media exclusion zones and deploying snipers for "lethal overwatch" purposes. Explosive details came out in this Guardian story from a couple of weeks ago google.ca/amp/s/amp.theg…
The situation has only escalated as a recent BC Supreme Court decision ruled in favour of TC Energy (Formerly TransCanada) giving the RCMP a mandate to enforce continued construction of the pipeline. google.ca/amp/s/business…
But the hereditary chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en nation have not granted consent to the pipeline to be built. And given that this area of northern B.C. is unceded land with no treaties the question of whether this pipeline can or will be built is still very much an open one.
And just yesterday the Wet’suwet’en evicted the Coastal Gaslink Pipeline workers from their territory. terracestandard.com/news/wetsuwete…
This pipeline will face extremely strong resistance both in the courts and on the ground from Indigenous people protecting their land. This has the potential to be an ugly, ugly international incident and now more than $4 billion of Albertans’ pension money is tied up in it.
And this comes as Kenney and the UCP have created an empire for AIMCO. Transferring over teachers’ pensions and removing the ability of pension plans to leave AIMCO.
And now this. From a Don Braid column “Government officials suggest there could be a strategic advantage for Alberta development. With many lenders shunning oil and gas, AIMCo might buy more stakes in the industry.” google.ca/amp/s/calgaryh…
The idea that AIMCO would risk Albertans’ pensions to prop up a sunset industry in order to please Jason Kenney’s political allies and donors is a very real possibility.
