The theme of #IWD2020 is #EachforEqual, because an equal world is an enabled world. Today’s #SundayScience features a few differences in the way men and women are wired. Being aware of these facts may help navigate the differences better, and strive towards #EachforEqual
Disclaimer first: These differences are more averages and typical conditions. They don’t necessarily characterise every man or woman #SundayScience
Genetically, the DNA of men and women is 98.5% identical. The remaining differences give each gender certain unique strengths #SundayScience
On average, men typically have more muscle mass than women. And those skeletal muscles are faster and more powerful. But women’s muscles more readily resist fatigue and are faster to recover! #SundayScience
Men have more information-containing gray matter in their brains, but women have more white matter, which connects different parts of the brain! #SundayScience
Men mostly use the left hemisphere of the brain, thus use logic more often. Women tend to employ both hemispheres, thus have a better feel, and are built more effectively for emotional communication. #SundayScience
During periods of stress, both men and women release the hormone oxytocin… but female estrogen combines with the oxytocin to create a calming effect, while the relationship of testosterone to oxytocin has a tendency to make men more aggressive! #SundayScience
Women have 11% more neurons in the brain centers, thus can hear better than men, and can also better distinguish between a broader range of emotional tones like crying! #SundayScience
Men’s parietal regions are thinner than women’s, thus are better able to visualise objects three-dimensionally than women can. This skill may have been developed back in the days when men hunted and regularly participated in competitive battles. #SundayScience
Men have thicker retinas and larger M cells, so sense movement of objects better. Women have more P cells, so can distinguish small difference in texture and colour better #SundayScience
Women have a harder time metabolizing alcohol because they have less of a liver enzyme that breaks it down. 1000 extra genes in their livers help men process alcohol faster, thus less likely to feel the effects of drinking than women. #SundayScience
While some studies have found that women are better at multi-tasking, others have shown the opposite. The accumulated data so far suggests that men and women are equally matched when it comes to their multi-tasking abilities 😊 #SundayScience
Closing this week’s #SundayScience with this video on “Six Fascinating Differences Between Men and Women in the Workplace”
See you next week with another edition of #SundayScience and a different theme👋
