As of today people in NY jails & prisons are not allowed to use hand sanitizer. Alcohol content means it’s contraband. Can’t use it. Loved ones can’t send it. But those same people incarcerated by NY are getting paid 65 cents per hour to manufacture it!
By the way, Gov. Cuomo has indicated support to repeal bail reform 2 months after it took effect & change to a system thatd ensure 10000s more jailed. NYC Mayor advocating for same before reform even started. Just another reason to demand #NOROLLBACKS. JusticeNotFear.org
Actually looks like starting “salary” is actually 15 cents/hour. This is slavery.

I know everyone is rightfully focused on Coronavirus. But if you care about criminal justice, the story you cant look away from: Last week a county in PA retaliated against & fired 2 top public defenders simply for advocating for clients. They remain fired. A chilling effect.

Livid. Mayor de Blasio blasting public defenders for calling the NYPD out on their transparent lies & cherry-picking of data to advocate for more jailing of Black & Brown people. I’ll say it again: the NYC mayor is the biggest threat to racial & pretrial justice in NY state.
Also: Can @BernieSanders please disavow his endorsement? An insult to advocates, organizers, & directly impacted people in NYC and throughout the state.
For months, @NYCMayor has been out fighting against decades long efforts just weeks after reform began. Advocating to give judges more power than ever before to jail Black & Brown people. Peddling debunked lies by the NYPD. Favoring procarceral interest over community.

Yesterday, despite “hours of testimony from roughly 50 residents & stakeholders the County Commissioners did not vote to reinstate its 2 top public defenders.” Firing Commissioner Val Arkoosh (@VAArk) had gall still to claim she “agrees criminal justice system needs reforming.”
This letter from dozens in Dean & Keisha’s office: “To witness our chiefs fired, escorted from the Office by security, given no opportunity to explain their dismissal was deeply upsetting, & created a sense of confusion, fear, & had a chilling effect on those of us who remained.”

Massive study (>40k ppl) on opioid addx treatment finds sig. reduct. in OD and health complications in pts on bupe & methadone. Other behavioral or residential care, detox, *naltrexone* had SAME OUTCOMES AS NO TREATMENT AT ALL. 1/13

It's far beyond time to start asking ourselves a few tough questions:
--why does SAMHSA financially support so many treatment centers that do not offer the only medications for opioid use disorder that are PROVEN to save lives? 2/13
--why are individuals who are arrested and/or imprisoned almost universally denied these life saving medications, regardless of whether they need them or were receiving them from a Dr at time of arrest? 3/13

Yesterday was my last day overseeing addiction & drug user health services for patients incarcerated on Rikers Island. It was an intense almost 4 yrs learning about health risks of jail (there are many), & collaborating w/ dedicated CHS staff to reduce harms for those exposed. 1/ Image
One of my proudest achievements was collaborating w/ medical, nursing & pharmacy to expand access to our jail-based opioid treatment program (KEEP), which had been offering methadone maintenance to patients w/ opioid use disorder since 1987, & buprenorphine since early 2000s. 2/
Jail is a dangerous place, & risks especially high for people w/ OUD. Forced withdrawal, which is norm in most jails & prisons, is associated w/ suffering & a dramatically increased risk of death -- both in jail & during post-release period. Methadone & bupe reduce that risk. 3/

For those who are inclined to say that all Trans are harmless individuals in need of support, sensitivity, and understanding, this should help clarify that embedded within the alternative lifestyle movements are a significant number of very deviant and dangerous sexual predators.
This is a huge safety concern for women. As this took place in a college dorm, Universities must ensure they have experts on campus who can help them discern the difference between those in need of emotional /psychological support vs, sophisticated predators in "sheep's clothing"

Take Yuusuf. A teacher before fleeing Somalia, Yuusuf's passion for education put him in the crosshairs of al-Shabab. He fled, but never reached safety. He was held in US detention for 800 days. When it looked like there was #NoEndInSight, he gave up.
Take Mateo. He fled Central America after his wife’s ex-husband tried to kill him multiple times. After arriving in the US he suffered from almost constant pain, vertigo + memory loss. He knew he needed treatment, but all he got was ibuprofen. Mateo saw #NoEndInSight. He gave up.
