Take Yuusuf. A teacher before fleeing Somalia, Yuusuf's passion for education put him in the crosshairs of al-Shabab. He fled, but never reached safety. He was held in US detention for 800 days. When it looked like there was #NoEndInSight, he gave up.
Take Mateo. He fled Central America after his wife’s ex-husband tried to kill him multiple times. After arriving in the US he suffered from almost constant pain, vertigo + memory loss. He knew he needed treatment, but all he got was ibuprofen. Mateo saw #NoEndInSight. He gave up.
Take Julio and Santiago, brothers who fled traffickers in 2016. Their circumstances were identical — but one remains in the US and the other was deported. #NoEndInSight
Many asylum seekers endure prolonged detention only to discover their case is essentially determined before a judge hears it. Which judge you are assigned changes the odds of receiving asylum by over 56 percentage points. The chances of receiving asylum are a matter of luck.
Detained immigrants like Yuusuf are held within a system of 205 jails & prisons across the country. Only 5 of these facilities are owned & operated by ICE. This profit motive creates incentives to cut corners.

The current system is needlessly punitive, pushing detainees to give up on their cases rather than spend another day in detention. Congress must the the Detention Oversight Not Expansion and Dignity for Detained Immigrants acts. Sign our petition. splcenter.org/congress-prote…

Peter Brown is a US citizen who was mistakenly detained by ICE after local sheriffs arrested him. We're suing. npr.org/2018/12/18/677…
In January, 17 Florida counties signed Basic Ordering Agreements, which compensate local sheriffs for their collaboration with ICE. Our lawsuit is the first to challenge a Florida sheriff for unlawfully detaining people at ICE’s request as part of a BOA. splcenter.org/news/2018/12/0…

Today @SynapseEnergy released a new report commissed by @NRDC on the opportunities and challenges for decarbonizing heating in #California buildings. Here is a quick summary thread.
CA's buildings are responsible for 25% of the state's #GHG #emissions and more than half of those already come from combusion furnaces and water heaters.
Switching to efficient electric heat & hot water will have a significant impact on reducing gas use in California buildings. As CA’s electric grid shifts toward clean, #renewable energy sources, #emissions from electric heat will continue to drop.

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."

Today, @RockyMtnInst released a new study on the economics of "clean energy portfolios" versus new gas plants. We find that gas loses, and it's a $350 billion and 10 GT CO2 prize for customers, investors, and the planet. Read on for more: 1/ rmi.org/insights/repor…
First, the situation: about half of the thermal capacity on the US grid is likely to retire by 2030. That represents a ~480 GW investment need for new capacity to replace it - and the default choice is new gas-fired capacity, which would cost ~$500B through 2030. 2/
Actually running those new CCGTs and CTs would cost another $400-500B, and emit 16 GT of CO2 through plant lifetimes. 3/
