👇🏻At the world average death rate for the virus calculated as of today (3.4%), that puts probable US deaths at 2.3 to 5.1M. (The US rate is currently higher.) At the US influenza rate (0.95%) those numbers would be 658K to 1.4M. So the reality likely lies somewhere in between. /1
The reason the actual number of US flu deaths is lower is that the total number of infections is lower because a portion of our population is vaccinated every year & we also have immunities, which we don’t to this. This is why the public health people are being so aggressive./2
So for instance, check out this chart that WaPo put together illustrating the difference in the outcomes for the Spanish flu in 1918 between St. Louis, which used aggressive social distancing, & Philadelphia, which didn’t. /3
