Tonight, both Philippine President Duterte & Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed their respective constituents. The difference was VAST. After PH speech, questions abounded: What does this mean? In SG, speech was clear, precise. Done in 11 min. #coronavirus
Singapore PM reassured country, "We are on top of things. We anticipated medical and economic consequences, I'm confident we can deal with them." He then praised frontliners. "Singaporeans are cheering them on." #coronavirus
After Singapore PM speech, we got a WhatsApp message with clear bullet points of what the plan was medically, how it is preparing for economic impact. It also assured:
"SG is NOT going to DORSCON Red: We have the situation under control." #coronavirus
Towards the end of his speech, he said: "We are all in this together, and we don't leave anyone behind." And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how Singaporeans and us who live here, sleep soundly at night. #coronavirus
This is no way meant to be a boast. One must NEVER brag in an outbreak as anything can happen. But we have to give credit where credit is due. The comments on the SG speech on YouTube are all praise: "Thank you for sharing and reassuring us all PM Lee!" #coronavirus
And yes, the SG speech started right on time, at 8pm as promised. And PM Lee did 3 different versions in 3 different languages: Chinese, English, Malay. So it's clear for all, and everyone feels like THEY MATTER to this gov't. Rich or poor. To show the gov't cares. #coronavirus

Seeing the drastic measures countries are taking with the #coronavirus, I'm so grateful to be an overseas Filipino worker in Singapore at this time. The SG gov't is calm, assuring, and because they did not underestimate the virus from the beginning, is in control.
In Singapore, I am assured of free medical treatment in a public hospital if I were to contract the virus. There have been a total of 178 cases in Singapore with 0 dead. I know this because I get a message on WhatsApp from the gov't with daily updates. #coronavirus
The Singapore govt's transparency is crucial in gaining the public's trust that everything is under control. They are meticulous in tracing the virus and know exactly where patients came from and who they had contact with. That makes me feel safe. #coronavirus

The thing about @carlosceldran is he taught me to love Manila. I was born and raised in that chaotic city, and like so many Filipinos, I would tell people visiting the Philippines to "skip Manila," that the best parts of the country are outside. He changed that for me.
My new line to tourists became, "Come to Manila and go to @carlosceldran's tour. THEN go outside and see the rest of the country." His honesty, objectivity & deep love for Manila and our history was so contagious. He taught me more about the Philippines than I learned in school.
Say what you want about his political views, but I think we can all agree that he loved Manila and the Philippines more deeply than most Filipinos, so much so that he dedicated his art to it. We've lost an ambassador in @carlosceldran. I'm grateful to have imbibed his tours.

Storytime. Landed in DC late last night after a transit and long haul from SG. I get to immigration counter and the officer asks me why I’m in the US.
Me: I’m here for a talk
Him: What’s your job?
Me: I’m a journalist
Him: What’s your talk on?
Me: #pressfreedom in Asia
He scoffs.
Him: The goal of news is just to sell and make money.
Me: Some outlets more than others. There’s enough to sell anyhow, with all that’s going on in the world.
He stamps my passport. As I walk away, he yells after me:
Journalists just make stories up.
I literally stopped in my tracks. I wanted to turn around and argue. I was insulted, frustrated, annoyed. This, from an immigration officer, who as a figure of authority, could potentially not let me enter the US if I engaged in an argument. This, in today’s America.
