And this is why governors are going to have to implement what will seem like extreme measures. Here in Ohio, there is community spread with an estimated 1% or 100K infected. Without knowing exact numbers, we have to anticipate this being beyond Ohio's capacity in days.
If even 10% of those 100K patients end up needing the ICU (reminder, in China the rate was 20-25%), it's likely that's already beyond our capacity. The US only has around 90K ICU beds for the whole entire country.
This is why DeWine and Fauci have been warning that it's going to get bad. This is why Dr. Acton (OH dept of health) said that in a week, it will seem like a different world.
At this point, it's obvious Trump doesn't care, and we can't count on him. Push your local govt to step up. If you need an example to point to, here:
Please also donate to your local food bank. They are going to need a lot of help. Offer to help your kids' schools to prepare for this too, as the schools often fill gaps for the most vulnerable around us. Check in with your older neighbors often.
What we do right now will determine how we come out on the other side of this.
If you can afford to, continue paying any service people who work for you on contract (cleaners, etc.), and sort out the services later. Do this for as long as possible. Doing so many mean the difference between them seeking medical help or not, preparing for this or not.
Someone asked for sourcing on the 1% infection rate in Ohio - this is WCPO, Cincinnati's ABC affiliate:
If you are someone who organizes events, and are struggling with the words/way to cancel, please feel free to steal this. Now is the time to lead - there isn't time to waste. concertnova.com/blog-to-link-t…
If you are someone who organizes events, please also understand that it's about more than just the event itself. Continuing leaves everyone's focus and time on the event vs. preparation (and with prep, less strain on our systems later).
Allow your team, instead of writing copy for ads and ordering swag for something that likely won't even happen, to go home, make sure their home is ready, prepare for children to be out of school. Then, turn your organizational skills to helping ride this out.
