Community spread is in Ohio, with an estimated 1% of our population infected. Additionally, one kid’s school is closed to to potential exposure. Here are steps we’re taking at my house to help flatten the curve:
We’ve elected to keep our pre-schooler home (I realize this is a luxury—but if you have it, exercise it).
We’ve elected to keep our oldest home on Monday even if school is open. I’ve talked to her teacher and will get the learning packets digitally.
We are forgoing our oldest’s violin recital this weekend (I can’t believe they are having it—it’s with tons of kids, parents, and grandparents). I made sure to tell them WHY we are not participating, more than once.
I also pointed them to resources on why cancelling is the best course of action.
I have started a group text with all the moms on my block so we can support one another and stay updated.
I run performing arts events for a living and have been advising for weeks to prepare for cancellations. I am very proud of them for doing it, even when it wasn’t easy (many others were NOT cancelling) and even when it means a financial hit.
We have effectively shut down. We are not planning to leave the house unless it’s to play in the yard. We are not planning to let our kids play with neighbors.
We donated to a food bank in our community. If you can, please do so. They will need as much help as possible. We donated money. They will need money, not our unwanted junk food and old cans of corn.
We will pay contractors who perform services in our home for as long as possible, but without the services. We’ll settle up later.
We’ve been astounded at how many smart, reasonable people don’t understand what’s about to happen. We explain it to anyone who will listen in the calmest way possible. What seems to be effective is laying out the numbers. We have x infrastructure and expect x to need it.
