I have extremely mixed feelings about this thread.

First yellow flag: No report that the mother had talked to a doctor or that daughter had been directed to get #covid19 test. You can't just "show up" and get a test.

Nor should you just "show up" at an emergency room ...
... unless it's an emergency. And for most of us, #covid19 is NOT an emergency (for our own health).

Nor did the poster answer my question about referral but she did thank me for info shared. That was before the tweet blew up.

Second, teaching moment:
WHY GET A #covid19 TEST?
1 - rule out other causes of symptoms
2 - health care worker checks
3 - provide data for scientists

We are no longer in containment. We are in mitigation. Public health officials aren't going to track your tracks.

3/x
And they aren't going to tell a healthy young adult or teen to do anything different if they test positive for #covid19 than if they don't (ie, present with flu-like symptoms).

Isolate. Drink fluids. Rest. Take an OTC drug for fever, cough. Rinse and repeat.

Third, teaching moment:
THERE IS NO "CURE"
It is novel #coronavirus. Novel.
Immunologically naive population.
The body and virus have to do their thing, preferably in isolation so you don't pass the virus along to someone with a compromised immune system.

Fourth, teaching moment:
If you're sick, you should stay home. You shoulda stayed home with the seasonal flu but we have a culture that prizes 'macho' and selfish behavior.

But the seasonal flu has (a) vaccines and (b) antiviral drugs for people who get really sick

6/x
Thousands get really sick and die of influenza ('the flu') or its side effects like pneumonia every winter.

But because 99% of us have no immunity (I'm assuming those who've been exposed and recovered do) ... we're susceptible.

7/x
Folks with compromised immune systems more so. They're the people who need testing ... to make sure there's not something TREATABLE that's causing their symptoms. Like, you know, the regular flu. Or bacterial pneumonia.

8/x
BECAUSE TESTING WON'T CHANGE OUR TREATMENT but it could very well change theirs. And because if they have to be hospitalized, staff with isolate those patients to keep from infecting other vulnerable patients.

9/x
Help manage the load on #covid19 places on the health care system.

Talk to a doctor ON THE PHONE if you have flu symptoms.

When you're told to isolate/quarantine, DO IT. If you have a fever, DO NOT GO OUT.
