German and Italy are ramping up production of medical ventilators to meet expected peak epidemic demand. They cost $17k each. Italy getting army involved in helping production line...

As far as I’m aware UK has one small manufacturer of ventilators - that had 40% market share.
So, accepted in normal circumstances you can’t turn this stuff around - but 10 weeks plus is surely time for manufacturing industry to step up...set up production lines if necessary

There are limits on people trained to use equipment, and beds cut back -but this is l-term battle
Depends what ramp up capacity if available at existing factory... but I’d be building another factory too, if it was me, recognising the rarity of coronavirus vaccines generally...

Sure @MakeUK_ @siemens_press etc could help...

Some reasons why UK wouldn’t order more ventilators now - two types invasive & non-invasive, former is what is required for intensive care, latter only type made in UK at Chinese-owned factory in Stratford.

- not enough trained nurses to operate
- not enough beds
- few left now
If this is correct the UK factory in Stratford (owned by Chinese) making non invasive ventilators might be quite useful...

The scepticism on school closures is explained here.
Was linked to modelling for pandemic flu. Others (eg WHO) have pointed out coronavirus is not a type of flu, and medics were urging seniors to look at what was actually happening in China/ Italy
Again... the early strategy built on trying to avoid green line in Autumn, by tolerating red line extra impact earlier on. Not yet known if green second bump will happen.

Missing line here - NHS capacity.

Current plan somewhere between red and green, hopefully avoiding red-blue

Bank of England & Prudential Regulatory Authority make techie moves on bank regulation, cancelling stress tests etc...this one on an accounting reg called IFRS9 caught my eye -senior bankers told me it obliged them to book non performing loans immediately, reducing lending power
So the Bank and PRA are telling banks to look to the medium term in applying IFRS9 and the expected losses from companies hit by the virus - forecasts are “challlenging” but should reflect “temporary” nature of shock and significant support/ relief measures annnounced globally...
Ie this is a move to try top get the banking system not to exacerbate the sharp downturn, my taking into account that it is only temporary, in accounting for expected losses. It could be very important.

Governor Andrew Bailey said todays emergency moves were done against a background of “borderline disorderly” markets yesterday as sterling fell sharply and UK borrowing costs went up

NERD ALERT: Let’s talk about the Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) tariff in NY. I’ll give a trigger warning that there are suggestions in this thread that there is a life beyond net metering for states serious enough to overhaul their distribution systems.
the inspiration for this thread was an order out of the @NYSDPS last week on VDER. The order made some significant changes to reflect the long run value of distributed energy resources and make the tariff FAR more financeable and more attractive for solar-plus-storage. (2 of ?)
the changes ALSO, and more importantly, are way better for the grid. VaDER is leaving the dark side. It is going to get to be the successor to net metering that is fair to solar customers and all ratepayers; we'll get there, folks (3 of ?)

Given the political dynamics in #Italy, it is time to dust off my analysis from 2016 - 'Eurosceptics in Power' - on how Eurosceptic parties have influenced EU policy making both in the EP and when in nat. government

Four points stand out in particular:
First, Italy is not the first instance of eurosceptic and/or populist parties entering national government.

Elite consensus on EU integration has been waning for a long time - reflecting the more sceptical attitude in many member states.
Second, in decision-making at the EU level they acted (largely) constructive. Voting data from the Council revealed no strong increase in vetos or 'no' votes after Eurosceptic parties entered nat. governments.

Exceptions to this are migration and institutional questions

1. Everything started with the arrest on Wednesday of Elmahdi Halili, 23 years old, a guy born in Italy of Moroccan origin and living near Turin. He had been already arrested a few years ago for terrorist propaganda, he is the writer of the 1st Italian known ISIS manifesto
