After sending this tweet, I got a few "herdimmunitysplaining" replies.
Let's talk about it, shall we?
First stop: "Let's just infect the young to build immunity"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't an Old&Sick county & a Young-Only county in the UK, is there?
Where are the measures to make that happen?
Said young population doesn't live in a bubble.
Vulnerable people do not either.
Oh, BTW - 2nd stop: Who are the "others to protect"?
+65: 12.5 m
5.4 m with asthma, 1m w/ chronic lung disease
2,3m diagnosed or recovering from cancer
This 👇
20 m people seems to be a low estimate.
20 m people to protect by infecting the others.
Again -how?
Not all the people ending up in ICU are vulnerable people.
OK -not that many cases.
But how many people would pull for herd immunity if they got it means *they* can get really sick/end up with permanent damage?
Have they been told?
Hey UK even with a 20% infection rate the NHS wld crumble.
Acceptable rate allowing the NHS not to crumble: 16,000.
(5% in ICU of 16,000 = 800 = the number of available beds).
"Let's infect 40 m", really?
"No but future benefits!"
Well we don't know the virus well enough to be sure of that
So here's my call on that:
Lock down
Emergency funding for the NHS
You won't save everyone but at least try and don't pretend it's a cunning strategy
Have some respect for the doctors who'll be in the front line deciding who gets to live
