GETTING HOME ISOLATION RIGHT

1/ In China, a huge chunk of cases came from infections between family members.

How to avoid infecting your loved ones?

(thread)
2/ Disclaimer: I'm not a MD, this is not medical advice. It's a collection of best practices I collected from the internet. I'm sharing them on a "better than nothing" basis.

If we don't protect our loved ones from within-family infections, cases will rise even with a lockdown.
3/ What I've been doing for the last 6 weeks upon coming home:
- Drop shoes outside
- Place bags near door
- Wash hands till elbows
- Disinfect phone
- Throw clothes to wash
- Wash glasses
- Shower
- Do the above without touching furnitures
- Disinfect laptop, mouse & chargers
4/ Singapore installed hand sanitizers in elevators. They keep you safe directly and indirectly (keeping your neighbors safe).
5/ If a family members of yours came in contact with someone infected, or if (s)he shows symptoms, or if there is other reason for suspicion, it's important to lower risks by lowering the chances that, if sick, (s)he infects the rest of the family.

This can be done by…
6/ This can be done by:
- Having him wear a mask
- Having him stay in a room
- Dedicating a bathroom to his private use (if you have >1)
- Having him eat separately (so that he doesn't spit on food)
- Having him avoid kissing / hugging
- and so on
7/ Perhaps it's okay to find a trade-off depending on the probability that the person contracted the infection.

It's hard, it's painful, but remember: in China, a huge chunk of the cases came from within-household contagion.

Do you really want to risk infecting your loved ones?
8/ We saw over the last weeks that "better safe than sorry" was an unapplied principle, and the consequences have been catastrophic.

It's also very stressful. Following the measures above could at least make your household a safe space, where you can not worry about the virus.

10/ The above might not be enough.
It is my understanding that China sent teams to test people door-to-door, and suspected cases were quarantined in separate ad-hoc buildings. This helped them avoid in-family contagion.
11/ I don't think that any western country is ready for this, so let's begin with the above.

The better we do self-quarantine, the lower the chances that further, draconian steps will be needed.

Good hygiene is important not only to preserve health, but also freedom.
