So much for super-forecasters... (from Politico playbook)
Truth is the government has been playing catch-up on coronavirus for a couple of weeks. Wanting business as usual when it was becoming increasingly clear that wasn't possible judging by other countries. Hence being behind the curve.
Easy of course for a government to get caught up in a crisis and be unable to see the big picture. Particularly for a ideological government instinctively closed to different views. But that's what has to stop, too much to do.
Big day for the economy today, where plans have to be put together at speed. But so many elements need managing - social, hospitals, science, shortages, planning of the year (what happens when disease squashed for a while?) The war footing for this generation.
Great there are so many science of coronavirus articles. Would like to see more from the government specialists on managing the big picture, also economics, social etc. My initial effort (thanks to the reader who said "ok") here - but much more needed. linkedin.com/pulse/thoughts…
Who fancies organising the virtual conference on the politics and governance of coronavirus? Government needs help, and I say that to be constructive though many others are feeling rather less charitable.
If nothing else I'm keen to hear more on managing coronavirus fallout from the best brains I see here - the likes of @TorstenBell and @Frances_Coppola on the economics, @TFletcher on international cooperation, @davidallengreen on the legal system, and so many more...
This is very good from @MESandbu on the need for a large fiscal stimulus to handle the economic fallout. Design and implementation would be complex I suspect. ft.com/content/9963f7…
