It's been hectic here, and I have only now read the article that @marklevinshow linked and President Trump retweeted late last night. It's an extraordinarily shoddy piece of writing, but actually quite revealing of how pro-Trump media are now shifting to cope with this crisis...
My original article, the one partially quoted and mischaracterized by the Federalist, did not praise the Chinese communist party. My article excoriated the Chinese communist party. Read it for yourself. amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/60…
My point was that years of neglect of public health, plus Trump's creation of a leadership cult around himself, meant that we got some similar outcomes as China: slow reactions, a cover-up, presidential lies and talk of hoaxes.
But that means America is in real trouble. Which also means that American patriots need to stare hard at reality, understand it, diagnose it, and fix it. In these circumstances, it is unpatriotic to seek to blame China or anyone else for problems we created ourselves.
If the pro-Trump media is now going to go down the road of China bashing, we will not solve our problems. In the past couple of days I have heard from people who used to work at CDC and they agreed that the agency has been hollowed out, though many good people still work there.
Anger at China, and loud rhetoric about communism, will not help us fix the CDC. So please stop.
