The situation in Magna is stable. But after a very challenging morning, things are under control.
This is an evolving situation.
We are working with crews throughout the valley and looking at stabilizing gas leaks.
The best news of the day is that we have seen no injuries or loss of life.
We had been monitoring the plume from @kennecottutah. It was hydrochloric acid and most of it was contained in a catch basin. The tank is no longer leaking.
There is no more risk to the residents of Magna.
6 Hazmat crews will monitor
I'm happy to report that all the reports we are getting are minor damage. The situation is well in hand. I'd like to applaud all of the parters in emergency management and public works.
We are asking residents to stay home and stay away from first responders. @UPDSL has been on scene since the quake happened.
Many people checked on their neighbors.
"That's Magna, and that's how we roll."
A: Many displaced people were able to go to family members' homes. But Taylorsville High is set up as a shelter. Other building inspections are ongoing.
Q: What situation needed to be resolved?
A: We had considered evacuating. Not needed.
@FireAuthority Dan Peterson says his department flew drones to monitor the chemical plume. It has dissipated.
A: We continue to inspect buildings after aftershocks. Our response has been focused around damage in the Magna area. We could have 120 aftershocks from this morning's quake.
