Indians may not be particularly adept at communal hygiene

But in terms of limiting physical contact in social intercourse, Indians do well

Shaking hands, hugging, PDA are somewhat marginal practices in India - relative to rest of the world

Particularly in small town India
Also traditional India places a very high premium on personal hygiene

Less so on communal hygiene

In my personal experience, Indians are among the least smelly, cleanest people to be around with
Indian households are among the cleanest in the world!

There is a stark contrast between the extra-ordinary cleanliness of Indians and their houses, and the incredible filth on Indian streets and communal places
Because of this characteristic of Indian life, Indian poverty tends to get overblown relative to reality

Because our public spaces look and feel terrible

Private splendor and public squalor typifies India in more ways than one
