#InternationalDayofForests This thread is dedicated to many CCFs, Forest Officers, Rangers and Guards. Also to @SudhaRamenIFS @ParveenKaswan @susantananda3 who have spreading light on nature and environment. Am deeply indebted to @WWFINDIA as well.
#KanhaAchanakmarCorridorWalk In 2017 went on a walk organized by WWF India. What I learnt and observed is the thread. Will keep updating the thread. @chittukuruvi4
First thing that I saw were these massive Spiders!! In this variety, females are larger than males and the web spans huge good distance, typically between trees. Females, I understand, devour the males after mating.
Lichens on trees is an indicator of the air quality. More the lichens the better. During the walk, observed many trees with these markers. Try to see any tree that has this in a city. Doubtful.
Funnel Spiders. These spiders make their web on the floor of the forest around the base of the trees and ensnare their victims. But there are always opportunists, like another spider that hangs around this nest and whenever a victim, it tries to carry off the victim !
However, Funnel spiders are wise and spray a secretion around the edge of the web which tastes bitter to the opportunist!
Another tree with Lichen markings.
An Ant Nest. This is typcially formed in a slope and this 'nest' is made in such a way that water will find it difficult to enter. What kind of "Engineering" Degrees these ants undergo, I wonder!
This also is another Ant Nest. Ants sew up the leaves to form a nest. (Cont'd.) @chittukuruvi4
It was the month of November. Vast lands were covered with Mustard flowers.
Tribal Lady wanted me to take her photograph and posed!!
It was common sight to see this vegetables being put on top of the roof.
And in a home, Corn Cobs were tied and arranged like below!
There were times when we were greeted with sights such as
And Pink Coloured Dragon Flies:
And met Baiga Tribals
#SwissRailways often say that the journey itself is the destination. So was the case here! The journey through the heartland of Madhya Pradesh and coming out of Chhattisgarh was an absolutely enriching journey.
Became richer with a bit of knowledge of forests, its trees, plants and the people who live there. @mayfair1958 @RajeIyer @chirpbirding @bithika11 @prasanu202 @ugtunga @1967Vandana @Abhikhandekar1 @iamajmer @PreethyPrasant1
Astronomer Story Musgrave, in one of his keynote addresses said, that one does not realize that our lives could be absolutely be dependent & be in another's hands. When we travel into space we totally trust another person to protect your life when you are in the "other" world.
Same case when I travel into forests like this or when I go for Bird Count surveys. Our lives are totally dependent on these very Forest Rangers and Forest Guards who protect us, unseen to us, our lives where wild animals abound.
A huge shoutout to each of them for doing this work selflessly. And without them, our Forests would seriously be endangered. Again many thanks to each of them!
