I feel like “Of course BigCo is astoundingly hypercompetent at the thing they do that made them BigCo” is contrarian but for no good reason.
Who in the world has thought more about the question of “Contingent on NYC suffering a disaster, how quickly can we serve 1 million hot meals?” than some nameless supply chain manager at McDonalds?
You might think “Hmm I think the United States should plausibly have an expert with a plan for that situation.”

It does, but he works at McDonalds.

We've learned that if it isn't someone's job to care about some X for a rather minor X, like say onboarding flow for a web application, that the level of organizational understanding of X will be very bad and decisions will often tend to be suboptimal.
The magic word for this in tech is DRI: directly responsible individual.

You would think, for very, very important Xes, the relevance of which to the organization is obvious, that organizations would naturally have a DRI for X.
You know that line in Mario? "Sorry Mario, your princess is in another castle."

Sometimes every castle thinks the princess is in another castle.

Reading a favorite Berenstain Bears book with Lillian (5) she pointed at Papa Bear and asked:

“What’s that?”
“Papa Bear.”
“No what is the paper he is holding.”
“His newspaper.”
“What is a newspaper?”

And I realized: she’s never seen one, in five years.
And aside from the meditation on the implications for media/etc, I am reflecting that the newspaper was central to my relationship with Dad. He read the WSJ with me every weekend, before I even knew how to read along.

But I don’t read tweets/HN/news/etc to Lillian.

Hmm...
“Central?”

Maybe not the right word, but there were five of us, but he loved the routine of reading the WSJ and I was the only one who would happily read along and say “What’s an interest rate?”

Reupping this book recommendation if you’re looking for something to take your mind off things, but be forewarned, it will not entirely take your mind off things.
Official fecklessness, global spread of information faster than the disaster but ignored except where it wasn’t, acts of heroism and grace, a rapid mobilization across society, I will say the words “South Africa” and warm that the book gave me new nightmares 10+ years later, etc

Good day to everyone. Something has just occurred to me. As many of us do, we spend timing thinking about things that go on in our every day lives, and sometimes things dawn on us. Today the whole legal system and how congress is involved with it came to my mind. The media too!
What does congress do? They pass laws right? Laws that get people arrested and fined right? How many parties are involved with an arrest? First cops, then lawyers, judges, and yes, even the media. Its all one big scam. Though the police do not get paid well, everyone else does!
Congress will pass a law that causes someone to get arrested. Cops arrest a person for breaking that law. Then 2 sets of lawyers get involved, along with who knows how many judges.The media is eventually involved, one way or they other. Congress gets kick backs from all but cops!

I'm going to chat a bit more about #LincolnGreen🏹 this morning, even if it isn't #Greenwoodensday.

I want to talk about the Oaths, advancement, design goals & something I'm going to awkwardly describe as player in-roads into GM territory in a traditionally GMed game. 😐
So #LincolnGreen🏹 is "traditionally GMed" in that there's a player, called the Game Warden, in a GM role that 30 years ago Eppy would recognize. Well, 32 years ago—before the Bullwinkle & Rocky Role-Playing Party Game. Or 1 BBRRPPG as we in the industry like to measure time.
BBRRPPG I understood GMs to be benevolent, but darkly mischievous, near omnipotent totalitarians. Give or take a little on each of those dials, of course.

The Warden is a similar role. The Warden knows the world and represents it to the other players.
