The Sanders team was divided over many important decisions, but most of all on how to handle Biden.

One faction constantly pleaded with Sanders to go on offense. Others saw it as a futile exercise – Bernie & Jane liked the Bidens and their word was final.

Sanders's pollster outlined this (prescient!) scenario in mid-January, in the latest of many appeals he made for Bernie to go on the attack.

But there was no consensus about what to do next, and Sanders never made the inroads he needed with black voters.
As Sanders rose to the top, a wide range of allies urged him to modulate his message and make overtures to the middle of the party.

There was frustration at the highest levels of the campaign with a group of aides and allies who lobbied relentlessly for Sanders to nuke Biden, well past the point that the candidate had made it clear he did not want to do so.
