As a doctor I feel that I must speak out. We don't have enough doctors nor places in hospitals to take care of everyone that will get the virus!! We don't have enough personal protective equipment in hospitals. Please let that sink!! In other words, if you get the virus...
You're probably not going to get treated. We dont even have enough tests to medically confirm you having it. The tests themselves in their form right now are inaccurate. ALSO, your doctors at the hospitals? They're getting COVID19 & are not being properly cared for. So guess what
Your doctors that are on the front lines of this war are getting COVID19. Only some of them know. Hospital admins are denying their doctors getting the tests as is. How do we know? Partners of doctors are getting COVID19 & hospitals are still forcing those MDs to go work AND
Those doctors are STILL being denied COVID19 tests. These doctors are going to other hospitals than the ones they work at to get tested. And they're coming back positive. We haven't even started talking about all the other personel at hospitals that are going through the same...
Our healthcare system is so weak. We let profiteering rule it for so long. Large hospital systems have BILLIONS in reserves that they dont use to build facilities. Docs themselves have been trying FOREVER to provide the same services hospitals offer that are desperately needed...
We don't manufacture enough medical supplies for our needs. We don't have enough doctors & other medical professionals even in normal times. Vital drugs cost A LOT. Private health insurance/care costs a fortune. & our president @realDonaldTrump wants churches packed for Easter.
@realDonaldTrump wants the stock market to thrive at the expense of Americans. He essentially wants us dead in the name of the Dow Jones.

Really? This is what it's coming down to?! We need to act. We're SO late. Get on my contact list. Let's fight back.

There’s five problems preventing enough personal protective equipment (PPE) to the front line healthcare workers in the midst of a pandemic: Inventory stockpiles, Manufacturing capacity, quality control, trade compliance, air uplift capacity, and working capital. /1
Inventory stockpiles: hospitals are estimating they will need 20x their average rates of PPE during the next few months. The supply chain just didn’t have enough inventory buffer for a 20x shock. /2
Manufacturing capacity: 20x’ing something as complicated as a manufacturing line takes time. More time than a pandemic allows, especially if you don’t kick into high gear as soon as the hospitalization rates turn geometric. /3

@lloydblankfein is 100% wrong. This goes against laws of nature. Do not argue with biology. (For example, working parents know you can't delay a baby's due date!)

Social distancing must work at least 5-6 weeks, until test-and-trace or more drastic measures are ready.
For example, consider the new lockdown measures here in New Jersey.

Our local schools closed on 3/13. @GovMurphy announced shelter-in-place procedures starting Saturday 3/21. Everyone wants to know: how long will we have to do this?

The answer is based on "decay times."
First, the "rise time": there's a bad storm of infection coming our way. We can see it coming. From infection to symptom is 5 days on average. From symptom to death, 14 days. That's 19 days total.

Counting 19 days from 3/13 gets to 4/1. That's the earliest we'll see a dent.

Rather, do you know how the majority of people who are deceased as a result of the new Coronavirus, perished? 3/

As a physician, I am absolutely appalled by the risk/treatment of doctors and other health professionals during this pandemic. Every conversation or media post by my colleagues from across the country is one of frustration and anger.

Non-medical personnel, i.e. hospital CEOs & management, who are NOT actually on the frontlines treating patients are dictating how we practice medicine & are forcing us to put ourselves and our patients in high risk situations.
2/
MDs are told that there is not enough personal protective equipment, we should reuse & ask permission for masks. Or to not test symptomatic folks in the ER bc rooms need to be cleaned & aired out for 2 hours or because there are not enough testing kits.

THREAD: Yesterday, I spoke with doctors from one of the nation’s leading academic hospitals located in a state where #COVID19 cases are increasing quickly. This is what they told me: They've been seeing *many* patients with symptoms concerning for COVID19 who need testing (1/x)
But they are unable to get the *vast majority* of them COVID19 testing. Their only resource for testing is the state lab. But the state lab is severely limited in capacity and it will take another few weeks for the hospital lab to implement its own test. (2/x)
So the hospital is saving their test requests for only those who are severely ill - such as those with ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) who have tested negative for other conditions (like influenza). In other words, they are having to ration tests. (3/x)
