1. Mark my words: the Trumpian counter-narrative is already shaping up. If things go really bad, Trump will (as he's done all along) find other people to blame: China, Democratic governors. It fits in with his existing narrative of xenophobia and anti-cosmopolitanism.
2. Let's assume a political best case scenario: Trump defeated in fall election. Even then, he and his followers (who will remain plurality of GOP) will blame everything on China/Dem Governors/Deep State etc.
3. If Trump is defeated, he'll still retain his hold on a large chunk one of America's political parties. He'll continue to tweet conspiracy theories. He might run again (as a way of ensuring that he can accuse any criminal prosecution can be portrayed as political persecution)
4. And Trump won't be alone. Under a Democratic president, plenty of rightwing outlets will continue to defend him -- just as many right wing historians continue to defend Herbert Hoover, Joseph McCarthy, and Richard Nixon. There will be no consensus on his awfulness.
