How about a Friday-night thread for Quentin Tarantino’s birthday, today? 🔥

My 5 Favorite Things About QT:

#1: He’s a master of suspense. ‘What’s in Marcellus’s briefcase?’ ‘What’s behind the screen door?’

“Once Upon A Time in .. Hollywood” (2019)
#2: .. Tarantino gets a lot of flack for being, shall we say, “wordy”.

But he’s actually one of the savviest purveyors of SILENCE.

“Pulp Fiction” (1994)
... In “Pulp Fiction”, Mia even complains about silence.

“Don’t you hate that?”

“Hate what.”

“Uncomfortable silence.”

#3: He’s (obviously) an insanely astute student of film. But it works for him.

If you’re going to pay homage to McQueen/The Great Escape, you don’t MISS.

“Once Upon a Time in ... Hollywood”
... when you pay homage to Fellini’s “8 1/2” (1963), ... don’t MISS. 💯

“Pulp Fiction” (1994)
#4: He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty.

Here he is — dancing — along with Travolta and Thurman while filming the Jackrabbit Slims sequence.

“Pulp Fiction” (1994)
#5: While Tarantino is a master at blocking his actors for the camera, (just look at how much story he packs into ONE SHOT) .....

“Once Upon a Time in ... Hollywood”
... he’s often at his best when he locks down the camera on a tripod — and trusts his actors to deliver the goods, whether that’s via improvisation...

.. or through a finely-tuned script — in what is arguably the most memorable moment Tarantino has ever put on film.

Happy birthday, QT. 💯
