Another Paper (2014): #Chloroquine is an established antimalarial agent that has been recently tested in clinical trials for its anticancer activity. #Covid_19

The favorable effect of chloroquine appears to be due to its ability to sensitize cancerous cells to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and induce apoptosis.
The conclusion that chloroquine is a zinc ionophore is based on the detection of significantly elevated intracellular zinc levels when both zinc and chloroquine were added to the cell culture medium.
co-localization of zinc with the lysosome and the induction of apoptosis when cells were treated with the combina¬tion of chloroquine and zinc. These data suggest that clioquinol and chloroquine may in part share a similar mechanism in their anticancer action.
It is interesting to note that the combination of chloroquine and zinc alters LC3B-II protein levels in our model system, indicating that zinc affects chloroquine’s inhibitory effect on autophagy.

If patients are old or have underlying conditions with serious symptoms, physicians should consider an antiviral treatment.

For the antiviral treatment, the doctors recommended lopinavir 400mg/ritonavir 100mg (Kaletra two tablets, twice a day) or #chloroquine 500mg orally per day.
As chloroquine is not available in Korea, doctors could consider hydroxychloroquine 400mg orally per day, they said. There is no evidence that using lopinavir/ritonavir with chloroquine is more effective than monotherapies, they added.

Another Paper: Here we found that treating the patients diagnosed as novel coronavirus pneumonia with chloroquine might improve the success rate of treatment, shorten hospital stay and improve patient outcome.

It recommended chloroquine phosphate tablet, 500mg twice per day for 10 days for patients diagnosed as mild, moderate and severe cases of novel coronavirus pneumonia and without contraindications to chloroquine.
Previous research has shown that chloroquine exerts antiviral effects through different mechanisms. Because chloroquine can change the pH value of endosomes, it has a significant inhibitory effect on viral infections that invade cells through the endosome pathway

Three in vitro studies have demonstrated that chloroquine phosphate inhibits SARS-CoV-2 (8;9) and two have demonstrated that hydroxychloroquine sulfate inhibits SARS-CoV-2 (8-10).
In addition, chloroquine has demonstrated its efficacy in Chinese COVID-19 patients in clinical trials by reducing fever, improving CT imaging, and delaying disease progression

It's a murky situation. Nothing known for sure yet. Note difference between in vitro & in vivo
2/ There are a great many efforts to find medications useful in treatment of severe #COVID19; the ones named here are only some of the ones currently being tried or in formal trials. Note the attempt with protease inhibitors (Kaletra) too.

That's a tough question, but, if it helps, here's how I'm currently thinking about #COVID19 in the US.
To begin, it's always prudent to prepare, but not panic. I'd point you to @cmyeaton, @HelenBranswell, and @mlipsitch who are the rational experts (w/ consistent Twitter presences) that I look to for all things epidemic preparedness and this US Gov. site: ready.gov/pandemic
