Last night in the ICU of a #NYC hospital, I cared for 20 patients who were all on breathing machines due to #COVID19. Some REALLY young (20s), without comorbidities. Everyone is extremely sick. But sicker patients keep flooding in…
We are REALLY feeling the strain. We don’t have enough ICU beds. Many patients are being intubated as soon as they show up to the Emergency Room. We are doing our best to take care of them on regular floor beds and in the ER itself. But it is HARD...
Some of our sickest patients with #COVID19 really need dialysis, but we don’t have enough machines. We are actively rationing care - something I thought I would never see in our healthcare system...
It is heartbreaking to have end-of-life discussions w/ family members. No part of me was prepared to convey that a family member can’t say goodbye. That their love one would have to be alone during their final moments. I cannot imagine how they feel...how painful it is...
Hospital staff are exhausted & honestly - scared. Our healthcare system is in survival mode...
But I have never been prouder to be a physician in #NewYorkCity. My incredible colleagues - everyone - is rising to the occasion. We are doing our best. We will get through this together.

The ventilator is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the fight against coronavirus. If a patient can’t breathe on their own, a ventilator helps move air in and out of the lungs for them - providing oxygen and also, importantly, removing carbon dioxide. (1/19)
Ventilators are also called breathing machines. They were also previously called respirators, but that is an outdated use of the word. Respirators in a health care setting typically means a protective mask. (2/19)
Respiratory therapists help manage the ventilators and help care for patients using them. And, the room where a ventilator is stored has to be properly equipped, including oxygen and back-up power supply to make sure the ventilator never stops accidentally. (3/19)

As stated before:

Finally authorities are putting Mazandaran province on quarantine: only fuel and food trucks are allowed. This late, its effectiveness will be limited.

The same authorities have had argued for quarantine to be "non-scientific" and "from middle ages".

I was there as a hospitalist doing a month of nights. What follows is my experience and what I learned.
You know how people say “my dad was in the war but he never talked about it?” These memories are like those. They have been sort of locked away for 10 years.
We didn’t have the forewarning like we do now. We just heard there was an early flu season and the flu was worse. I feel like the beginning of the month was normal. Chest pain. Pneumonia. Pyelonephritis. Asthma exacerbation.
