This #DalitHistoryMonth, meet Sunita Kureel, a first-generation learner who fought all odds to achieve her dreams and became the first person in her entire family to graduate and become a government employee at the age of 19! - Pranjali Kureel #TheyInspireMe #DalitHistoryMonth
To escape caste-based slavery, her father had fled his home, situated in a small village in Uttar Pradesh to find work in Delhi, with almost no resources and contacts. After setting up a small business of stitching bags, he got married. #TheyInspireMe #DalitHistoryMonth
On 28 Dec 1971, she was born- second of the four daughters. She was a bright student in school who wanted to study mathematics but was forced to take up Arts. She still went on and passed the school, only to be told by her parents that they cannot afford to send her to college.
A ‘rishta’ (match) came at this point to get her married. But she knew that she had to stand on her own feet- so she fought, did not eat for two days but finally managed to get admission in Delhi University. #TheyInspireMe #DalitHistoryMonth
Given their financial condition & the pressure on her, she knew she had to work soon. She decided that she will work in a bank- a goal that was harboured in conversations with a neighbourhood friend- whom she relied upon for guidance, and also for books which she couldn’t afford.
While doing her graduation, she also studied for the bank exam, learned typing, alongside helping in taking care of the household and younger siblings. And at the age of 19, before even graduating, she had that job in her hand. #TheyInspireMe #DalitHistoryMonth
A first-generation learner & the first person in her entire family to graduate & become a government employee, she fought all odds to open doors for more women after her. From a bank clerk at 19, to now a manager at 48, she has come a long way. #TheyInspireMe #DalitHistoryMonth
This phenomenal woman is my mother, and she inspires me to just be like her- a fighter, because that’s certainly the only option this casteist and patriarchal society leaves us with! #TheyInspireMe #DalitHistoryMonth #DALITWOMENFIGHT
