I’d add more specifically, providing & facilitating opportunities for African health workers, communities, researchers & innovators to think through not just specific solutions to aspects of pandemic but broader whole strategy that takes our different contexts into account....
Also add, given our experiences with @EpiAFRIC’s Health Meets Tech programme, facilitating MULTISECTORAL collaboration on innovative approaches to tackling the pandemic on the continent as @nke_ise called for here
Would also add as specific area for business continuity, private healthcare institutions, some of which I’ve been made aware (in Nigeria) are perilously close to collapse due to COVID-related issues. Whatever your perspective on private healthcare on continent, hope you agree....
...This is no time to lose healthcare capacity (including ITU beds) in the continent. We should be looking at how to harness that capacity in response to COVID pandemic.

Getting calls on how do I volunteer. Starting point maybe contact organisations in health sector eg @NCDCgov @AfricaCDC via website, twitter or Facebook pages. Usually respond promptly. Make it easy in busy time. Be clear & real on skills, where you are, what you can offer...
But there’s a lot you can do on your own without recourse to anyone. There are masses of resources & guidelines on @NCDCgov website. You could commit to sending those to 100,200, 300 people. You could commit to ringing people & talking them through the guidance...
You could translate some of the guidance into your local dialect or language and share. You can share the @NCDCgov guidance on managing COVID patients & infection control with every health worker in Nigeria that you know covid19.ncdc.gov.ng/guidline.html

On social media break but peeking briefly into Twitter, stunned at some of the reactions on COVID, so I’ll share a few points I think are important. I do not in any way intend to minimise the seriousness of the challenge the world faces, but hope these may be of value to some....
I’ve been trying over the last few months to use the serenity prayer to guide my actions & reactions: “Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, & wisdom to know the difference”. It’s been helpful for my mental health...
It’s helped me deal with the turbulence in the 3 countries I have personal connections to, the UK, Nigeria & the US and was helpful when I lost my laptop early this year. Thanks to @TfL I got it back. It’s also been incredibly helpful at this time of COVID, so I am sharing...

The WI GOP has refused calls to delay the election & switch to vote by mail, despite the obvious threat to public health of in-person voting. But 1.2 million Wisconsinites have already requested absentee ballots. Now our sprint begins to get them returned.
We have one of the strongest field teams in the nation, now working virtually, around the clock, to follow up with people who requested absentee ballots and help them return valid votes. And to mobilize an army of volunteers to do the same. By every possible non-in-person means.

I'm planning to use this thread as a centralized repository of bits of advice/recommendations that I'd like to share regarding #COVID19 preparedness, and how we can all try to help improve things in what is certain to be a very trying time for everyone, worldwide.

Let's begin:
Here's my Rule #0: Don't panic.

This is a daunting time. But panicking makes you worse than useless to those around you, and we all need to be able to help each other out wherever we can.

We need to get a handle on our emotions, and use reason to help us get through this.
A corollary to Rule #0 is Rule #1: Try not to make things worse for everyone else.

A large number of good recommendations spin out from this basic principle.

The biggest example of this might be spreading misinformation, rumor-mongering and spreading paranoia to others. Don't.

1/ Seven years ago today, I woke up early, put on a suit and tie, and went to my classes at the University of Iowa. I had a speech to give later that night in Des Moines. I had no idea that it would change my life forever.
2/ I was nervous all day, struggling to focus, reviewing in my head over and over the words I had written the night before. After class, I got in my Pontiac Grand Am and drove to Des Moines as a light snow fell.
3/ The call for speakers had gone out a week earlier. Iowa Republicans had decided their top legislative priority was rolling back the unanimous Iowa Supreme Court ruling recognizing marriage equality for same-sex couples like my parents.
